Speciation and Bursts of Evolution

Abstract: A longstanding debate in evolutionary biology concerns whether species diverge gradually through time or by rapid punctuational bursts at the time of speciation. The theory of punctuated equilibrium states that evolutionary change is characterised by short periods of rapid evolution followed by longer periods of stasis in which no change occurs. Despite years of work seeking evidence for punctuational change in the fossil record, the theory remains contentious. Further there is little consensus as to the size … Show more

“…As it occurs with the tree of life [46][47][48]50] technological trees are highly imbalanced, largely a consequence of accelerated diversification events tied to innovations. This pattern has also been found in the diversification pattern of human languages [51,52], which exhibited strong imbalances too. The asymmetries have been proposed to be evidence of punctuated equilibrium [53,54].…”

“…Examples of punctuated equilibrium are provided by the evolution of mammalian body weight [12], hominoid body size [13], several morphological traits of rockfish [14], intersexual signalling of cranes [15] and many other data [16 -22]. Clearly, both gradual and burst-like evolution does happen, but their relative importance remains controversial [23][24][25][26]. Of course, there can be many causes for alternating episodes of stasis and evolution and of punctuation in molecular and morphological evolution.…”
