Specialty Fibers Designed by Photonic Crystals

Abstract: Abstract-In this paper, several kinds of photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) have been proposed and characterized. Two types of PCF structures have been proposed, air holes in silica or silica rods in air in a triangular lattice around the core. It has been shown that by reshaping the cladding holes, varying the diameters of the holes in one or two rows around the core or changing the refractive index of the holes, different types of specialty fibers, such as dispersion shifted fibers (DSFs), non-zero dispersion sh… Show more

“…Photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) have attracted a lot of research attention due to many possibilities and promising applications in communication and sensing [1,2]. Based on the design flexibility and the large index contrast, high birefringence can be easily realized in PCFs.…”

“…However, much of the optical switches are still predominantly performed electrically in recent applications. With the emergence and development of the microstructure fiber (MSF) which has shown a great success to achieve unique properties such as high birefringence [28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36], flattened dispersion [37][38][39][40], large negative dispersion [41,42], high nonlinearity [43,44], endless single mode [45] and so on, there emerges a new opportunity for the exploration of optical switching technology that it is possible to make the optical fiber be an optical switch. Recently, a type of nanomechanical optical fiber [46] has been proposed and demonstrated, which has two fiber cores independently suspended within the fiber.…”

“…PCs have many interesting applications such as omnidirectional re ector [3], lters, optical switches, light-emitting diodes [4], bers [5], waveguides [6] etc. When the light wave is incident on PCs, they face with number of dielectric layers with di erent dielectric constants [7].…”
