Special Section: Contending with Complexity: Developing and Using a Scaled World in Applied Cognitive Research

Abstract: Scaled worlds preserve certain functional relationships of a complex task environment while paring away others. The functional relationships preserved are defined by the questions of interest to the researcher. Different scaled worlds of the same task may preserve and pare away different functional relationships. In this paper we use the example of Ned to discuss the use of scaled worlds in applied cognitive research. Ned is based on a detailed cognitive task analysis of submarine approach officers as they att… Show more

“…ACT-R is a cognitive architecture that describes goal-directed behavior (Anderson & Lebiere, 1998;Ehret, Gray, & Kirschenbaum, 2000). The components of the cognitive system (i.e., goal, declarative memory, perceptual, and motor modules) contain information that production rules (conditional statements ‗if…then') use to carry out a cognitive operation (e.g., problem…”

“…Collections of production rules (like action-plans) are formed to carry out a specific task and retrieved via a pattern-recognition system that matches the task demands to previously stored productions. ACT-R has been successfully applied to model behavior in realistic CDC task domains that include navigation of a submarine by submarine-trained officers (Ehret et al, 2000), operating radar control systems (Gray, Schoelles, & Myers, 2002), and air traffic control (Taagten & Lee, 2003).…”

“…In particular, the time-dependent covariates are highly relevant in on-road studies, given the fact that there is typically less control in such studies than in simulator studies. More generally, as researchers consider the interplay of multiple psychological processes in describing complex adaptive behaviour, the need to consider time-dependent covariates will grow (Ehret et al 2000, Brehmer 2005). …”

“…Ned is a small-scale submarine control room simulation (Ehret, Gray, & Kirschenbaum, 2000). While it provides the functionality to perform all the functions necessary to locate a contact, all of the data on the contact are simulated.…”
