Special Issue: Ti-Based Biomaterials: Synthesis, Properties and Applications

Abstract: In the last half century, great attention has been paid to materials that can be used in the human body to prepare parts that replace failed bone structures. Of all materials, Ti-based materials are the most desirable, because they provide an optimum combination of mechanical, chemical and biological properties. The successful application of Ti biomaterials has been confirmed mainly in dentistry, orthopedics and traumatology. The Ti biomaterials provide high strength and a relatively low Young’s modulus. Titan… Show more

“…Manufacturing of parts via additive manufacturing is a viable method, especially for users who need custom made implants [50][51][52][53][54][55][56][57]. The additive manufacturing route is also helpful in developing implants with lower Young's modulus and improved biocompatibility [51].…”

“…This means that there is a poor bond between titanium and bones causing implant loosening which is highly undesirable. Therefore, surface modification plays a vital role in optimum osseointegration [15,20]. There are several techniques used in this regard such as: sand blasting [21,22], etching [23], electrochemical treatment [24], and thermal spray coatings [25].…”
