“…Following a similar thread, the writing technology of stenography is a site where the tension between affective and embodied experience in writing needs to be juxtaposed and discussed side by side within their cultural and sociopolitical contexts. Similar to the scholarship on the politics of transcription, which is situated at the intersection of the mechanical aspects of technology and unpacks how they are materialized and instantiated by those who are using them in a specific socio‐political nexus (Poulsen, Kvåle, and van Leeuwen ), this article examines Chinese stenography as verbatim transcription while foregrounding stenographers’ embodied experience as a site to interfere, contest, and challenge the assumed authentication of speech and written texts, which are largely regarded as the same in the politics of transcription. Writers' embodied, affective experiences as inscription labor serve as the vantage point for exploring the nexus of sociopolitical power and writing agents’ embodiment in the late Qing of the 1890s.…”

Writing Sound: Stenography, Writing Technology, and National Modernity in China, 1890s Writing practices are often subsumed under the authenticity of speech (Derrida 1976). This grammatological understanding of writing is especially conspicuous in transcription from speech to writing in institutional settings. However, transcription is not simply a "veridical record of speech" (Linell 2005) but imbued with power dynamics at the interface between writing subjects, technology, and institutions. Drawing on archival material and stenographic works from 1890s China, this article examines human-technology interactions in Chinese stenography. The emergence of stenography coincided with the ideology of linguistic modernity, the coming of internationalization, and the political agenda of national strength, boiled down to the sensorial shift of authenticity from eye to ear in writing practices. Stenographers were seen as "transparent" mediators between speech and texts. However, the embodied labor of stenographers precludes the perfect and complete representation of sound-in-texts. The indexical tie between speech events and "faithful" transcripts is thus broken, complicated by negotiations between the institutional power of political-technological rationality and executive subjects, stenographers. The legitimacy within texts, therefore, needs to be reexamined by looking into writing practices happening between stenographers and networks of institutional and technological ideologies.

This article explores community responses to 'Golden Head', a guerrilla artwork that was installed covertly in a Melbourne park in early 2020 by unknown persons. Focusing on local residents' reactions to this mysterious, unsanctioned statue, we document an ongoing array of playful speculations, creative responses and imaginative interactions that unfolded both in situ and via social media. We argue that in eliciting an outpouring of jokes, memes, stories, photographs and other creative rejoinders, this enigmatic object has strengthened and renewed a collective sense of place. We also consider Golden Head's reception in light of recent challenges to the legitimacy of many traditional memorial statues, and as a response to the increasingly over-regulated city. We conclude that this outpouring of imaginative local reactions to Golden Head constitutes a playful form of collective place-making that implicitly critiques the grandiose ambitions of official statues and affirms the oft-neglected ludic potential of urban space. Objetos enigmáticos y provocaciones lúdicas: el misterioso caso de Golden Head RESUMENEste artículo explora las respuestas de la comunidad a 'Golden Head', una obra de arte de guerrilla que fue instalada de forma encubierta en un parque de Melbourne a principios de 2020 por personas desconocidas. Centrándonos en las reacciones de los residentes locales ante esta estatua misteriosa y no autorizada, documentamos una serie continua de especulaciones divertidas, respuestas creativas e interacciones imaginativas que se desarrollaron tanto in situ como a través de las redes sociales. Argumentamos que al provocar una avalancha de bromas, memes, historias, fotografías y otras réplicas creativas, este objeto enigmático ha fortalecido y renovado un sentido colectivo de lugar. También consideramos la recepción de Golden Head a la luz de los recientes desafíos a la legitimidad de muchas estatuas conmemorativas tradicionales y como una respuesta a la ciudad cada vez más sobrerregulada. This paper examines the discourse of COVID-19 (also known as coronavirus) in social media posts and argues that the mediated COVID-19 discourse in Saudi Arabia enacted a variety of voices and thematic discourses that cannot be fully evaluated without reference to the locality of the sociolinguistic semiotics of the speech community. It attempts to construct the various non-verbal multivocalities in written and visual COVID-19 discourse present in 24 texts obtained from Saudi social media platforms, namely WhatsApp and Twitter, during the COVID-19 pandemic in the months of February, March and April, 2020. WhatsApp and Twitter are chosen because they are considered the platforms most used by Saudis in Saudi Arabia (GlobalWebIndex, 2020a, 2020b). The study employs a socio-semiotic approach to the analysis of collected data following Kress & Van Leeuwen (1996), mediated discourse analysis (Norris & Jones, 2005; Scollon, 2001) and systemic functional multimodal discourse analysis (SF-MDA). The analysis aims at integrating the social semiotics and multimodal approaches to better understand the dynamic Saudi discourse on COVID-19. The discourse on COVID-19 has revealed the dynamic multi-layered nature of governmental, individual and public voices pertaining to COVID-19 multi-discoursal themes, novel multimodal resources and the specific cultural semiotics of Saudi Arabia. The findings of the study revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic mediated discourse is relevant to the local speech community diglossic situation, cultural semiotics, social norms and integrated national identity.
