Abstract: In the present paper, the genus Spazigasteroides gen. nov. (Diptera, Syrphidae), with Spazigasteroides caeruleus sp. nov. as type species, is described from China. The new genus bears the following characters: Head strongly concave posteriorly and closely appressed to thorax so that the bare postpronota are entirely hidden. Face black in ground colour. Antennae short, with basoflagellomeres slightly longer than wide. Scutellum black. Postmetacoxal bridge incomplete. Legs simple, slender. Wing vein R 4+5 straig… Show more

“…Classically, Bacchini is defined as Syrphinae taxa with the aedeagus of the male genitalia rather simple, undivided (Vockeroth, 1969(Vockeroth, , 1992, and face and scutellum entirely black. The coloration of the face and scutellum is no longer a defining characteristic for Bacchini as there are Bacchini species with pale parts of the face (Vockeroth, 1990;Thompson, 1999) and Syrphini species with face and scutellum entirely black (Vockeroth, 1969(Vockeroth, , 1990Huo, 2014). The tribe Bacchini sensu lato, hereafter the members of Syrphinae with a simple aedeagus, has undergone several modifications in its definition, mostly due to the concept of the genus Baccha Fabricius, 1805, which ended up to an extremely diverse tribe (Vockeroth, 1969).…”

“…Figures of some characters employed in the key correspond to those treated in the chapter of Syrphidae in the Manual of Central America Diptera (Thompson et al 2010) and are indicated by the abbreviation "MCAD". The specimens were determined to genus level using the keys of Thompson et al (2010), Huo (2014) and Thompson and Skevington (2014). Our new species were compared with type specimens of twenty-seven Argentinomyia species and one of Talahua deposited in the AMNH, BMNH, USNM, and WIRC collections (Suppl.…”

“…The new key was modified based on characters provided by Thompson (1999), Thompson et al (2010), Huo (2014), Thompson and Skevington (2014) and Ramage et al (2018). 12C); abdomen elongated, with large markings on the terga, sometimes with a transverse fascia on the third or with a pair of small maculae in the basal corners of fifth tergum (Fig.…”

“…The old concept of the tribe Bacchini Bigot, 1883 has recently been extensively discussed (Huo 2014;Thompson & Skevington 2014). The tribe as defined by Vockeroth (1992) for those syrphines with an unsegmented phallus is now divided into two tribes, i.e., Bacchini and Melanostomini Williston, 1885 (Mengual 2020).…”
