Spawning induction for Latin American fishes

Abstract: Aquaculture offers solutions to meet the growing global demand for fish, and reports from the UN‐FAO indicate that aquaculture production in Latin America (LA) has grown at rates above the world average in recent years. One of the major constraints in the diversification of LA aquaculture is the control of reproduction in several popular native fish species for which difficulties in captive propagation have not yet been sufficiently overcome. This article reviews the use of hormone treatments to promote reprod… Show more

“…Genetic information is essential for aquaculture and fisheries management [ 17 ], supporting selective breeding for improved traits, enhanced disease resistance, genetic diversity maintenance, and sustainable practices. Furthermore, it facilitates product traceability, species conservation and adaptation to environmental changes, all vital for responsible and effective management of fish populations and ecosystems.…”

“…Pacu needs hormonal induction for spawning in captivity. The hypophysation with carp pituitary extract is the primary protocol for inducing spawn of native migratory shes in Brazil, including pacu (Criscuolo-Urbinati et al 2012; Kuradomi and Batlouni 2018; Mechaly et al 2023). This protocol, however, still presents failures related to female ovulation response, consequently causing spawning success unpredictability (Criscuolo-Urbinati et al 2012; Kuradomi and Batlouni 2018).…”

“…The study of fish reproduction in aquaculture is essential for improving farming practices and ensuring sustainable production ( Mechaly et al, 2023 ). Animal welfare is becoming increasingly important in both laboratory research and aquaculture, and the ethical treatment of laboratory animals requires special committees to monitor research protocols involving fish ( Toni et al, 2019 ).…”

“…This is mainly due to the fact that fish farming is the fastest-growing sector of animal food production worldwide (FAO, 2020). Therefore, the growing interest in diversifying markets, adopting sustainable aquaculture production practices, consolidating farmed species, and implementing biodiversity conservation strategies has led to the development of new commercial fish models. The study of fish reproduction in aquaculture is essential for improving farming practices and ensuring sustainable production (Mechaly et al, 2023).
