Spawning-habitat selection of an Indo-Pacific amphidromous gobiid fish, Sicyopterus lagocephalus (Pallas)

Abstract: Freshwater-fish populations of the Indo-pacific region are characterised by a large proportion of amphidromous species. We analysed the spawning-habitat selection of Sicyopterus lagocephalus (Gobiidae: Sicydiinae) within two rivers of the Reunion Island. Reproduction traces are rare events, so a presence-only sampling procedure was performed to collect egg clutches and a random description of available habitat was conducted to generate pseudo-absence data. Logistic models showed a strong selection for microhab… Show more

“…Gobies of the subfamily Sicydiinae, a diverse group of fishes inhabiting rivers of tropical and subtropical islands, provide novel opportunities for gaining insight into how functional performance may be influenced by morphology because they include several species that face severe, distinctive locomotor demands. Sicydiines are amphidromous: after a larval stage in the ocean, they return to rivers where they grow to maturity and spawn (McDowall, ; Teichert et al ., , ). However, in addition to common hazards such as predators (Nelson et al ., ; Blob et al ., ), most rivers in mountainous tropical islands are also punctuated by tall waterfalls.…”

“…Postlarvae recruit in the oligotrophic coastal streams where juveniles and adults settle and feed on microalgae that cover the river substratum (Bielsa, Francisco, Mastrorillo, & Parent, 2003). The species shows weak preference for specific habitats in rivers, excepting during the reproductive period when the males select specific spawning habitats (Teichert, Valade, Bosc, Richarson, & Gaudin, 2013). “…Reproduction of both species occurs in middle and upper reaches of rivers during the warmer months, that is December to May (Teichert, Valade, Fostier, Grondin, & Gaudin, 2016;Teichert, Valade, Fostier, Lagarde, & Gaudin, 2014). Females lay eggs under pebbles and rocks in runs and riffles (Teichert, Valade, Bosc, Richarson, & Gaudin, 2013).…”
