Spatiotemporal Variations of Summer Precipitation and Their Correlations with the East Asian Summer Monsoon in the Poyang Lake Basin, China

Abstract: Poyang Lake Basin (PYLB) is located in Southeastern China where the precipitation is closely related to the East Asian Monsoon. Based on the monthly precipitation data of 18 meteorological stations from 1959 to 2018 in the PYLB, Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF), Wavelet Analysis, and Pearson Correlation Analysis were used to investigate the spatiotemporal variations of summer precipitation and their correlations with the East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM). The results demonstrate that there were two leading m… Show more

“…Located in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, Poyang Lake is the largest freshwater lake in China with a drainage basin area of 162,200 km 2 (approximately 97% of Jiangxi Province) [22]. Five tributaries flow from the east (Rao River), south (Ganjiang River, Fu River, and Xinjiang River), and west (Xiu River) into the lake through the Poyang Lake Basin, and form a fluvial-deltas plain around the lakeshore area [23].…”

“…The city is a typical hilly lakeside area that is high in the northwest and low in the southeast, where the urban area is within the subtropical humid monsoon climate zone. The average annual temperature and rainfall are 17.5 • C and 1680 mm [22], respectively. The hydrology of the area is strongly seasonal as a consequence of the combined impact of seasonal rainfall and potential evapotranspiration patterns.…”

“…PLB (E: 113 1C) has an area of 16.22 × 10 4 km 2 [34], accounting for 9% of the total area of the YRB and about 97% of the total area of Jiangxi Province. It includes five important sub-catchments (the Ganjiang Basin (GB), Fuhe Basin (FB), Xinjiang Basin (XinB), Raohe Basin (RB), and Xiushui Basin (XiuB)) and PL, the largest freshwater lake in China [35]. The digital elevation model (DEM) of the basin reveals a substantial elevation gradient, ranging from a peak elevation of 2033 m in the upstream areas to a minimum of approximately 7 m in the downstream plains.…”

“…Pearson's correlation coefficient (r) was used to analyze the correlation between river network characteristics and the four influencing indicators (mean temperature, annual precipitation, mean population density, and GDP). Pearson correlation analysis enables correlation analysis of linear relationships between variables [47,48]. The definition and calculation formula of r were, respectively:…”
