Spatiotemporal variation in global floods with different affected areas and the contribution of influencing factors to flood-induced mortality (1985–2019)

Abstract: Floods are great threats to human life and property. Extensive research has investigated the spatiotemporal variation in flood occurrence, while few have studied the heterogeneity in global flood events of different sizes, which may require different coping strategies and risk reduction policies. In this study, we analysed the spatiotemporal patterns of global flood events with different affected areas (classified in three levels) during 1985–2019 and examined the contribution of different influencing factors … Show more

“…According to [6,8,9], landslides, windstorms, earthquakes, drought, floods, and other natural disasters may endanger lives, property, and productive assets and influence social indicators, destabilising the average stability of an area. Flood mortality in Europe averaged fewer than 250 per year throughout the 21st century, and between 1970 and 2006, the yearly flood damage in Europe had engulfed $3.8 billion [5,11,12]. Devastating floods, driven mainly by heavy rain, afflicted much of Europe in the first decade of the twenty-first century.…”

“…The August 2002 overflow devastated five major countries (Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Romania, and Hungary), resulting in about 55 fatalities and $20 billion in material damage. After that, another severe flood in France killed almost 23 people and cost approximately $1.2 billion in property damage [9,11,12].…”
