Spatiotemporal reconstruction and drivers of tourism-oriented towns: A case study of Jinshitan

Abstract: Reconstruction of settlement spaces is the process of optimizing and reorganizing the internal resources of a settlement, which is of great significance to settlement development. In this study, we used the land-use transfer matrix, land-use dynamics, building density, mean building height, and plot ratio in four time series to explore Jinshitan 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional space, production space reconstruction and its drivers. The conclusions were as follows: 1) 82.288% of cultivated land that was lost du… Show more

“…In the above multiple contexts, based on the characteristics of proximity and high frequency of tourists' trips under the influence of COVID-19 [40], the Chinese government found a new and suitable way to meet the current development environment; namely, to expand the scale of national cultural and tourism consumption, prosper the market, create employment, and preserve the excellent traditional culture by building night agglomeration areas capable of meeting the public's need for a better life. Mullins [83] first proposed the concept of tourism urbanization in 1991, defining it as a process and phenomenon that promotes the transformation of local industrial structures, community forms, and social evolution through the development of tourism to promote economic development [84], [85], [86], which in turn promotes urbanization. Night agglomeration area is a phenomenon in which economic transformation and industrial reconfiguration occur in the original scenic area, neighborhood, or town driven by tourism development, and represents a new and special form of tourism urbanization.…”

“…The selection of these two time periods makes the data time series long enough and comparable, contributing to the justified detection of potential shifts in long-term (2000)(2001)(2002)(2003)(2004)(2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)(2010)(2011)(2012)(2013)(2014)(2015)(2016)(2017)(2018) resilience trends (Smith et al, 2022). A transition matrix of resilience indicators between the two periods (Song et al, 2022) was constructed to reveal detailed information of the reversal in temporal resilience dynamics (details in Text 2.3 of the Supporting Information S1).…”

“…The first objective is to discuss the characteristics of urban socio-spatial reconfiguration in the context of specific cases from different scales such as international [37,42], urban [43][44][45], and community/specific intra-urban spaces [46][47][48][49]. The second is to analyze the mechanisms that influence urban socio-spatial reconfiguration [42,50,51]. The third is to analyze the effects of urban socio-spatial transformation and reconfiguration [52][53][54].…”
