Sustainable restoration of degraded ecosystems is a major environmental concern in several regions of China. Changting is one of the severely affected water- and soil-loss areas in southern China that have been under continuous management for the last 30 years. Taking the typical red soil erosion area in Changting, Fujian, as the research object, an evaluation index system with 30 m resolution was developed based on the Sensitivity–Resilience–Pressure (SRP) model. Spatial principal component analysis, Global Moran’s I, the LISA cluster map, and the CA-Markov model were employed to dynamically evaluate and predict the ecological vulnerability of the red soil erosion area in Changting. The findings revealed that the ecological vulnerability of the red soil erosion area in Changting has obvious spatial differences and topography, meteorological, and economic and social variables are the primary driving factors of ecological vulnerability. The analysis of spatial distribution of ecological vulnerability showed significant sets of contiguous locations of severe and mild ecological vulnerability. The total index of ecological vulnerability in the study area reduced by 9.49% from 2000 to 2020, yet it was still just mildly vulnerable. The proportion of severe and extremely vulnerable areas declined by 4.87% and 5.61%, respectively. The prediction results for the coming ten years showed that the ecological vulnerability of red soil erosion in Changting will tend to improve. In summary, it is found that after years of continuous ecological management in the red soil erosion area of Changting, the ecological restoration effect of the soil erosion area is obvious.

Ecological vulnerability is the focus of research on global environmental impact, regional sustainable development, ecological civilization, and green development. There are eight deserts and four sandy lands in northern China. The ecological environment is sensitive to climate change and human activities. It is of great significance to carry out long-term sequential ecological vulnerability assessments. Therefore, taking northern China as the research area, this paper selects 13 data indicators such as climate, topography, and soil based on the ecological sensitivity-ecological recovery-ecological pressure model (SPR) and uses the spatial principal component analysis method (SPCA) to quantitatively evaluate the spatial and temporal differentiation characteristics and driving forces of ecological vulnerability in this area from 1980 to 2020. The results showed that areas with extreme, severe, and moderate vulnerability dominated northern China, accounting for 74.58% of the total area. The analysis revealed a decrease in ecological vulnerability from west to east and north to south. Meanwhile, from the perspective of timing, the overall level of ecological vulnerability showed an upward trend before 2000, and the overall level of ecological vulnerability continued to decline after 2000, and the quality of the ecological environment improved. During the study period, areas in northern China with severe vulnerability and slight vulnerability showed a change of 15.53% and -14.01%, respectively. The main reason for the change in ecological vulnerability is the frequent transformation between forest land, grassland, water, and cultivated land. In addition, the study found a spatial autocorrelation of ecological vulnerability of northern China and a significantly positive correlation. After 2000, the spatial aggregation of vulnerability was high-high cluster, which was mainly distributed in northwest China. The study’s findings will provide a robust scientific basis for ecosystem management and sustainable development.

The key issue in the ecological compensation mechanism in the Yellow River Basin (YRB) is the allocation of ecological compensation funds, which need to be optimized to maximize the comprehensive benefits of compensation. In this study, a comprehensive allocation model for ecological compensation funds in the YRB was constructed using the “doughnut” framework. A pre-allocation model was used to enhance the ecological benefits and quantifies the ecological value created by the compensated subjects. A pre-allocation scheme was then determined using the pre-allocation model. The optimal allocation model focuses on benefit sharing and sets a socioeconomic discrimination index system to optimize the pre-allocation scheme. Then, an empirical analysis was conducted using data from 28 regions in the upstream YRB from 2016 to 2020. The results showed that in the pre-allocation scheme, the proportion of funds was low in the west and high in the east. Each region received compensation funds based on the ecological benefits they provide. In the optimal allocation scheme, the proportion of funds received by the central and western regions in the upstream YRB should be higher, while the proportion of funds received by provincial capitals and economically strong cities should be lower, which is in line with the actual development situation in the upstream YRB. The final scheme can effectively meet the objectives of basin-wide sustainable development, ecological benefits enhancement, and benefit sharing in the YRB. This can help achieve basin-wide sustainable development and provide a reference for determining ecological compensation fund allocation schemes in other basins.
