Spatiotemporal Distribution of Shallow Tremors Along the Nankai Trough, Southwest Japan, as Determined From Waveform Amplitudes and Cross‐Correlations

Abstract: Slow earthquakes are slip events on faults that have longer durations than ordinary earthquakes. These events often generate seismic waveforms characterized by dominantly lower frequency than ordinary earthquakes. Over the past two decades, research in geodesy and seismology has revealed a variety of slow earthquake phenomena, such as slow slip events (SSEs), very low-frequency earthquakes (VLFEs), low-frequency earthquakes (LFEs), and tectonic tremor (tremor). Tremor is often considered to represent a swarm o… Show more

“…Annotation: KP=Kii Peninsula; CM = Cape Muroto; CA = Cape Ashizuri. (Baba & Cummins, 2005); and the down-dip extent of tremor epicenters (Araki et al, 2017;Tamaribuchi et al, 2022;Yamashita et al, 2015) and clusters of very-low frequency earthquakes (Nakano et al, 2018) Along-strike variations in the width of the outer-wedge are also apparent in our model from cross-sections (Figures 8 and 9) and in map view (Figure 11). To obtain regional 3D constraints on the geometry of the backstop, we calculate the thickness of crustal material (V P ≥ 5 km/s) overlying the megathrust (Figure 12a).…”

“…Color and contours show the thickness of crustal rocks ( V P ≥ 5 km/s) overlying the megathrust and the up‐dip extent of the crustal backstop (orange dashed line). Colored squares show the backstop broadly coincides with the up‐dip extent of co‐seismic slip in great earthquakes in 1944 and 1946 (Baba & Cummins, 2005); and the down‐dip extent of tremor epicenters (Araki et al., 2017; Tamaribuchi et al., 2022; Yamashita et al., 2015) and clusters of very‐low frequency earthquakes (Nakano et al., 2018) linked to slow‐slip events beneath the outer‐forearc. “…DONET also allowed us to investigate the activity of shallow tremors in the high-frequency (2-8 Hz) band (e.g., Annoura ), we roughly estimated the moment rates from the energy rates of the shallow tremors (Tamaribuchi et al 2022). The scaled energy is the ratio of the tremor energy and the synchronized VLFE seismic moment.…”
