Spatiotemporal Differences, Dynamic Evolution and Trend of the Coupled Coordination Relationship between Urbanization and Food Security in China

Abstract: Scientific assessment of the coupled coordination degree between urbanization and food security (CDUFS) revealed regional differences and sources. Dynamic evolution and trends are important references for achieving a coordinated interaction between high-quality urbanization and ensuring food security. Specifically, the CDUFS was measured using prefectural panel data in China from 2000 to 2019 and the coupling coordination degree model, which revealed its spatial correlation and differentiation. On this basis, … Show more

“…The MMA refers to those areas with weak cultivated land resources, poor natural conditions, and less agricultural land, mainly in some coastal and economically developed areas. The BPMA refers to those provinces between the MPA and the MMA [ 1 ], which have better natural conditions and richer agricultural resources. Although their contribution to China's grain production is limited, they can meet their production and consumption needs and roughly achieve balanced production and marketing.…”

“…However, the inefficient problem using of cultivated land is becoming increasingly severe in rapidly urbanizing and industrializing China. To scientifically plan cultivated land resources and increase grain production, the State Council of China divided 31 provinces into 13 main producing areas (MPA), seven main marketing areas (MMA), and 11 balanced production-marketing areas (BPMA) in 2001 [ 1 ]. For different food functional areas, the government put forward additional requirements.…”

“…The community in urban areas should be educated about the concept of energy balance, increasing healthy diet and physical activity through health and nutrition education as well as environmental conditioning that supports health. Nevertheless, the rate of urbanization should be decreased to improving the living conditions and employment in rural areas (Liu & Hou, 2022).…”

“…With the rapid development of society and the economy, the issue of food safety is deeply rooted in people's minds and is closely related to food safety, the social economy and human life (Serge et al, 2022;Jin and Zhong, 2022;He et al, 2017;Seto and Ramankutty, 2016;Liu and Hou, 2022). Food safety problems are mainly caused by the following factors: pesticide residues (Tang et al, 2021), bacterial species and biotoxins (Yesim et al, 2022), heavy metal contamination (Xiang et al, 2021), and illegal use of food additives (Wang et al, 2021).…”
