Spatiotemporal Characteristics and Hazard Assessments of Maize (Zea mays L.) Drought and Waterlogging: A Case Study in Songliao Plain of China

Abstract: The Songliao Plain is the largest maize (Zea mays L.) cropland area in China and, thus, is most influenced by water stress. To mitigate the adverse impact of water stress on maize yield and quality, various agricultural irrigation strategies have been implemented. Based on land surface temperature and an enhanced vegetation index, this study constructed the temperature vegetation dryness index (TVDI) and combined the Hurst index and Sen trend to analyze the spatiotemporal characteristics of drought and waterlo… Show more

“…Current studies have shown that the middle and high latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere are most obviously affected by global warming [10], which is manifested by increasing precipitation and extreme heavy precipitation events [11]. Heilongjiang, which is a typical "climate-vulnerable area" [12] and one of the regions prone to climate disasters [13], is located in the middle and high latitudes, spanning about 10 latitudes and longitudes [14]. Main characteristics of meteorological disasters in Heilongjiang [15]: (1) Frequency.…”

“…With global warming and urbanization, the frequency of extreme natural disasters has increased, posing challenges to regional ecological security [1][2][3]. Issues such as biodiversity reduction [4,5], habitat loss [6], and eutrophication [7,8] have become prominent, thereby hindering balanced development and emphasizing the importance of planning, protecting, and governing regional ecological security patterns (ESPs) [9][10][11].…”

“…For example, on 20 July 2021, Zhengzhou City, Henan Province, saw a "once-in-a-millennium" torrential rain, causing severe flash floods, landslides, river floods, and large-scale urban floods. The disaster caused 380 deaths and missing people in Zhengzhou City, with direct economic losses of CNY 40.9 billion, seriously affecting people's lives [8][9][10]. The frequent occurrence of floods is closely linked to climate change.…”
