Spatiotemporal changes in regularity of gamma oscillations contribute to focal ictogenesis

Abstract: In focal ictogenesis, gamma oscillations (30–70 Hz) recorded by electroencephalography (EEG) are related to the epileptiform synchronization of interneurons that links the seizure onset zone (SOZ) to the surrounding epileptogenic zone. We hypothesized that the synchronization of interneurons could be detected as changes in the regularity of gamma oscillation rhythmicity. We used multiscale entropy (MSE) analysis, which can quantify the regularity of EEG rhythmicity, to investigate how the regularity of gamma o… Show more

“…And while chaotic dynamics might seem counterproductive for the brain, it has been theorized that these patterns are critical for information storage (Aihara et al, 1990;Brunel & Hakim, 2008;Jia et al, 2012;Korn & Faure, 2003). And perhaps fluctuations into the occasional window of stability within this chaos play a role in pathologies such as epilepsy (Sato et al, 2017).…”

“…This suggests that an alteration of the E‐I networks will affect theta‐gamma coupling which will be associated with episodic memory deficits. In addition, changes in spatiotemporal regularities of gamma cycles reflecting modifications in interneuronal synchronization dynamics are associated with focal ictogenesis (Sato et al, ). Local generation of gamma oscillations ahead of interictal epileptiform discharges (IA) reflects a role of these oscillations in pathological associated networks generating IA and may be used as useful association (gamma‐IA) in clinics to map seizure‐prone brain regions (Ren et al, ).…”

“…[12][13][14] We recently showed that high gamma oscillation (30-70 Hz) regularity (GOR) calculated with interictal ECoG data analysis could sensitively detect the epileptogenic zone in focal cortical dysplasia. 15,16 We hypothesized and tested whether this method could also be applied to epileptogenic zone localization in epilepsy surgery for cavernomas.…”
