A total of forty-four groundwater samples were collected from several groundwater wells located at diverse depths and locations throughout the Kre-Bardarash basin in the Duhok governorate. The sample program began in May 2023 and includes the examination of several heavy elements, including but not limited to (As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Va, Ni, Zn, Bo, Cr, Co, Li, Mn, Se, and Ag)The essential goals of this research are to find that the samples have concentrations within the acceptable limits as prescribed in Iraqi drinking water standards. The average Heavy metal Pollution Index (HPI) concentration is 955, which is considerably less than the crucial index value of 100. The percentage of groundwater samples that exceeds the 100-index value is 5%, indicating that the water is completely unsuitable unfit for drinking, while 90 percent are rang from excellent to very poor quality according to HPI. The MI concentration was 0.16 with 88.6 % percent of groundwater samples were found to be very pure water class. The results show that the groundwater in the Akre-Bardarash basin of wells 1,2, and 3 is highly polluted in the northeast part, and wells 22 and 30 are also highly polluted in the south-east part. All of the wells mentioned above are unfit for human consumption. The impact of human activity and industrial activity on the study area has played an important role in the pollution of groundwater quality in the northeast and southwestern parts of the Akre-Bardarash Basin. According to the findings of the current study, it can be concluded that the water can be used safely for drinking without any negative effect on human health, except wells 1,2, and 3 in the northeast part and wells 22 and 30 in the southwest part.

The research included, for a period of 6 months, a study of two aspects. The first was the isolation and diagnosis of oomycetes in the water of Al-Diwaniyah River in five sites. The sites where pollution increased were chosen, namely textile, rubber factories, and sites before water treatment, compared to two sites: Sadr Al-Daghara and a site under Al-Diwaniyah Bridge, which had little pollution, as the percentage of pollution increased. Ovomycetes in pollution sites in order to increase the organic matter in them and to provide many nutrients, knowing that these fungi were isolated from control areas, but in small proportions, in addition to other groups of non-oomycetes and the previously dominant types of Oomycetes. Some physical tests were conducted on the water of the Diwaniyah River in the study sites to observe the suitability of the physical characteristics for the presence of these fungi, namely temperature, PH, alkalinity, hardness, and others. The second aspect is to consider these fungi as indicators of pollution in the river water when they are present in polluted areas by analyzing the enzymatic filtrate to measure The percentages of presence of heavy metals, such as cadmium, mercury, lead, and selenium, which appeared in high percentages that exceeded the permissible limits for their presence, whether in river water or in the bodies of living organisms. The percentages of cadmium were (0.012)% in Saprolegnia sp. and Pythium sp., while the percentages of lead were (1.5, 1.3).)% in Saprolegnia sp and Fusarium sp, while mercury recorded a percentage of (0.3, 0.05, 1.2)% in Achlya., Apodachlya sp.,. Fusarium sp. Selenium appeared at a rate of (0.2)% in Apodachlya sp, Arsenic in Pythium sp. At a rate of (0.02%) also for the purpose of comparison of these results, tests were conducted for heavy metals in the water at the selected sites (L3, L2, L1) (fabric, rubber, and site before treatment) respectively. The results showed the appearance of heavy metals (cadmium, lead, mercury, arsenic, selenium). In high percentages compared to sites L4 and L5, their percentages were very small, almost reaching zero.

Recently, the influx of pollutants into rivers has increased owing to the impacts of climate and environmental change, consequently accelerating the pollution of river ecosystems and aquatic habitats. Consequently, river water quality must be precisely assessed to facilitate effective management strategies by discerning different aspects of water quality deterioration and enhancement and by identifying and regulating river contaminants. Understanding water quality at a cursory glance is highly challenging, particularly for individuals lacking expertise in water pollution assessment. Hence, the present investigation utilized a domestically developed real-time water quality index (RT-WQI) to scrutinize the water quality attributes at 12 specific locations within the total pollution quantity monitoring network situated in the main channel of the Nakdong River system to render the water quality of the river easily comprehensible even to non-specialists. Furthermore, an attempt was made to detect patterns by applying the Mann–Kendall test and locally weighted scatter plot smoothing (LOWESS) using the index values for water quality assessment. To achieve this aim, extensive water quality data (averaged on a monthly basis) spanning 2004–2022 were obtained from the Water Environment Information System of the Ministry of Environment (https://water.nier.go.kr). The gathered date were then subjected to computation of descriptive statistics for individual water quality parameters to delineate the distinctive features of water quality. This study anticipates that the evaluation of water quality across diverse river systems in the future will facilitate the identification of highly polluted rivers and confirm their trends, thereby providing fundamental data for the management of river basins and the formulation of water quality policies.
