Spatiotemporal Analysis of Human Mobility in Manila Metropolitan Area with Person-Trip Data

Abstract: Abstract:The metropolitan area can be regarded as a multi-functional structure consisting of plural coordinated urban nucleuses. This study aims to clarify the characteristics of urban nucleuses and a spatiotemporal pattern of human mobility in the Manila metropolitan area. Hourly density of human mobility from 00:00 to 24:00 in the whole study area is quantitatively studied. Urban nucleuses with six types: central city, business city, commuter town, south suburb, north suburb, and subcenter city, are identifi… Show more

“…In the context of the oriental world, the situations of labour division, family responsibility, human lifestyle and migration are usually accompanied by great differences in gender and age (e.g. Liu 2018; Wako, et al, 2001). As mentioned in the Introduction section, Chinese RMWs’ periodic migration behaviour has some specific features.…”

“…The three vast UAs, that is, BTH, YRD and PRD, are the most developed and populated urban areas in China, as they accounted for 9.0% (BTH), 19.8% (YRD) and 8.6% (PRD) of the national GDP and 7.9% (BTH), 17.1% (YRD) and 9.3% (PRD) of the country's total densely inhabited district population in 2018(China.org.cn, 2019. Based on our calculation and the official figures (cf.…”

“…This corresponds to how commercial activities in many cities occur in clusters thus creating more than one centre of activity, which reduces the importance of CBDs as these other centres begin to accommodate commercial activities. The nuclei with their clusters of activities benefit from being located close to one another as this locational arrangement creates synergies and allows shorter transport links from one economic centre of activity to another, creating several nuclei in parts of the city other than the CBD, hence the name Multiple Nuclei Growth model (Liu, 2018).…”

“…However, the irrational spatial agglomeration of urban spatial elements has also led to an imbalanced distribution of urban spatial elements, exhibiting unreasonable concentration and dispersion across different scales [10,11]. For example, the imbalance in facility allocation and job-housing has given rise to numerous urban issues and compromised the quality of urbanization [12,13]. Analyzing the spatial agglomeration pattern and the evolutionary characteristics of urban elements facilitates a rational understanding of development rules and trends, as well as the recognition of urban development challenges, thus achieving the healthy and sustainable development of cities.…”
