Spatio-temporal variability in Mediterranean rocky shore microphytobenthos

Abstract: Knowledge of spatio-temporal variability of assemblages is the first step in identifying key factors affecting the abundance and distribution of organisms. Despite a long history of ecological studies on rocky intertidal habitats, there is still a lack of basic knowledge about the microphytobenthic components. We investigated the spatio-temporal variability of microphytobenthos in the northwest Mediterranean at multiple scales, including both seasonal and daily observations, as well as its composition. Spatial… Show more

“…Snails were counted just before the start (14 March) and eight times during the experiment (18 and 24 March, 6, 13 and 22 April, 6, 17 and 26 May). After 65 days (18 May), photosynthetic biomass and maximum photosynthetic efficiency of epilithic autotrophic organisms (largely dominated by cyanobacteria; Maggi et al, ) were estimated in situ through a non‐destructive methodology based on in vivo fluorescence of photosynthetic pigments (by means of a pulse amplitude modulated fluorometer; Diving PAM, WALZ). For each quadrat, estimates were obtained by averaging two replicate values of minimum fluorescence ( F o ) and effective quantum yield of Photosystem II (Yield = ( F m − F o )/ F m ; F m = maximum fluorescence), respectively.…”

“…Biofilm assemblages at Calafuria include mainly cyanobacteria, with diatoms being less abundant (Maggi et al. ). The most important grazer at this height on the shore is the littorinid snail Melaraphe neritoides (L).…”
