Spatio-Temporal Trend Analysis of Groundwater Levels in Sharjah, UAE

Abstract: United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a water stressed country due to limited rainfall. Moreover, rapid population growth, increase in agricultural and industrial activities are causing additional stress to the water resources in UAE. Groundwater is the most important fresh water source in UAE, and sustainable and efficient management of groundwater is vital for the country. “…Qatar, Libanon, Oman, Yemen and the United Arab Emirates, however, show even positive mean trends between 0.2 and 4.2 mm/year, which is limited to the central, sparsely populated desert and mountainous areas, with the more densely populated coastal areas and the western and eastern parts showing slightly negative trends. For the eastern part of the United Arab Emirates, this coincides with the regional observation of Yilmaz et al (2020). It has to be mentioned though, that the results of the GRACE-derived data for the smaller countries of the Arabian Peninsula has to be interpreted with some care.…”

“…Dolayısıyla, GAP bölgesindeki kuraklığın alansal ve zamansal tavrının, gidişinin ve hızının su kaynaklarının yönetimi ve risklerin paylaşımı açısından belirlenmesi büyük önem taşımaktadır. Küresel ısınma sonucunda meydana gelen iklim değişikliğinin izlenmesinde gidiş analizlerinde parametrik olmayan Mann-Kendall gidiş testi [19][20][21][22][23], Sen'in gidiş eğim metodu [24][25][26] ve Spearman'ın Rho testi [27][28][29] yaygın olarak kullanılan yöntemlerdir. Mann-Kendall gidiş testi analizlerinin genel olarak noktasal ölçekte [30][31][32][33] uygulandığı dikkati çekmekte; yorumların ise bölgesel ölçekte yapıldığı [34,35] görülmektedir.…”
