The present study provides updated information on amphipod assemblages of the southern Portuguese coast, the most south-western part of continental Europe. The inXuence of depth and sediment type on the spatial distribution of shallow soft-bottom amphipods was tested by means of univariate and multivariate methods. Samples were collected down to 40 m depth within areas ranging from very Wne sand to gravel. The ratio between density and diversity was found to increase with depth and from coarser to Wner sediments. Both physical variables tested were found to play a major role in structuring amphipod assemblages. However, some dominance of depth was evident as samples were mainly separated according to this variable. Moreover, while only 15 taxa were common to all depth levels, 35 were collected from all sediment types. Both depth and sediment type may override the potential eVects of geographical location, as samples from diVerent areas along the southern Portuguese coast were biologically related. A peculiar habitat was sampled in this study: a maerl bed, which was conWrmed to be a hotspot of density. Nevertheless, this habitat did not harbor a distinct amphipod assemblage but some taxa such as Caprella spp., Lembos websteri, lysianassids and Gammarella fucicola were preferentially collected there. The biogeographical analysis pointed out the occurrence of 8% of Mediterranean endemic species, conWrming the inXuence of the Mediterranean Sea beyond the Strait of Gibraltar, and the AtlanticMediterranean feature of the amphipod fauna of this geographically relevant area. The present results support the need to interpret the spatial distribution patterns of marine species in relation to the combined eVect of depth and sediment characteristics.

“…Works on amphipods from this area have been mainly carried out on the Catalan coast (Castany et al, 1982;Bibiloni, 1983;Carbonell, 1984;Jimeno, 1993;San Vicente & Sorbe, 1999;Munilla & San Vicente, 2005;Cartes et al, 2007Cartes et al, , 2009Delgado et al, 2009) and the Andalucia coast (Conradi et al, 1995;Conradi & López-González, 1999;Sánchez-Moyano et al, 2007;Gonzalez et al, 2008;Guerra-García et al, 2009a, b;. Inventory of benthic amphipods from fine sand community of the Iberian Peninsula east coast (Spain) (2004 -2008) of the shallow (12-20 m) soft-bottom homogeneous fine-sand community have allowed the collection of 55 marine amphipod species (53 Gammaridea and 2 Caprellidea) along the 250 km of Iberian Peninsula east coast (Spain, Mediterranean Sea). Among the species recorded, one recently described is new to science, five were collected for the first time in the Spanish Mediterranean and 14 were recorded for a second time confirming their presence. Of these 20 species; six are considered to be endemic to the Mediterranean Sea, seven are also north-eastern Atlantic species, and the last seven have a wide geographical distribution in the Indo-Pacific or Arctic and the Atlantic Oceans. Finally, multivariate analyses of species distribution showed changes among locations according to the northsouth axis and depth, parameters that highly influence the benthic communities.

Microdeutopus sporadhi (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Aoridae), an endemic species of the Mediterranean Sea, was described by Myers in 1969 on material collected from the Aegean Sea in a sheltered environment with high sedimentation rates. A check on the distribution and ecology of M. sporadhi showed that: -although not mentioned in the checklist of amphipods of the Italian seas, it was already found in the central Tyrrhenian Sea in 1983-84 and in the northern Adriatic Sea in 2002-03; -it was rarely found in the Mediterranean Sea, one of the most studied basins as concerns amphipod fauna; but notwithstanding the few records available, the wide ecological spectrum of this species was pointed out. This study, conducted off the Island of Ischia (Gulf of Naples, Italy), showed the presence of rich and well established populations through time, but only in a peculiar substratum (artificial collectors) and environment (low pH values). The species seems to be able to withstand harsh environmental conditions and probably to conceal itself through a cryptic behaviour, escaping traditional sampling methods. The role of rare or hidden species in bio-assessment should be re-evaluated.
