Spatio-temporal Notions and Organized Environmental Issues: An Axiology of Action

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to bring together temporal and spatial notions into a different set of axiologic pairs, and to trace examples in which such a set of pairs might be illuminating in accounts of how environmental issues are perceived in various social science disciplines. “…Aspects of phronetic social science and phronetic organization research have been much debated over the recent years (e.g., Cairns and Sliwa 2008;Caterino 2006;Csikszentmihalyi and Rathunde 1990;Flyvbjerg 2001;Hilton and Slotnick 2005;Jones 2005;Rowley 2006; Rowley and Slack 2009;Rämö 1999Rämö , 2004Schatzki 2002;Statler and Oppegaard 2005; for an overview see, e.g., Trowbridge 2006). A problem in this research field is the "fact" that practical wisdom remains difficult to study because it bridges our conventional categories of cognition, affect, and behavior, which are difficult to discern in isolated actions or propositions (Halverson 2004;Sternberg 1990).…”

“…this is an election year. Rämö (1999Rämö ( , 2004) has more to say on the implications of kairos and chronos to time management and environmental issues in contemporary organizations. Social work administrators and managers should keep up with such discussion and take account of both efficiency and effectiveness of services provided to clients in terms of doing the right thing at the right time.…”

“…Since the last decade, organization theory scholars have emphasized the greater relevance of kairotic as compared to chronological time (Whipp et al, 2002;Czarniawska, 2004;Rämö, 2004). Roe (2009) proposed a pragmatist approach to measured time and experienced time in organizational research, which would help to overcome the opposition between positivist and interpretive perspectives.…”
