Spatio-temporal footprints of urbanisation in Surat, the Diamond City of India (1990–2009)

Abstract: Urbanisation is a ubiquitous phenomenon with greater prominence in developing nations. Urban expansion involves land conversions from vegetated moisture-rich to impervious moisture-deficient land surfaces. The urban land transformations alter biophysical parameters in a mode that promotes development of heat islands and degrades environmental health. This study elaborates relationships among various environmental variables using remote sensing dataset to study spatio-temporal footprint of urbanisation in Surat… Show more

“…Geospatial techniques with integration of temporal satellite data sets and statistical analysis, it has become more efficient to observe the landscape changes [6], [7], [8]. Geospatial techniques have already shown their value in mapping urban areas, and as data sources for the analysis and modelling of urban growth and land use change [9], [10]. Studies were carried out to analyze the population growth and its impacts on environment using geospatial techniques [10], [11], [12].…”

“…In developing countries, urbanization is occurring at a rapid pace and is accompanied by fast urban land expansion. During this process, a large amount of ecological land transits into the urban area, including natural land and cropland [6][7][8]. Developed countries also confront similar problems.…”
