Spatio-Temporal Change and Driving Force of Oasis for Desert Reservoir from 1988 to 2016 in Northwestern China

Abstract: Arid and semi-arid regions, where precipitation and water resources are scarce and the ecosystem is bitterly frail and very sensitive to anthropogenic interference, constitute approximately 41% of the total global land area [1-3]. Besides, about 44.46% of arid and semi-arid regions have seen rising temperatures and reduced precipitation in the past 100 years [4]. Deserts and oases are the main landscapes in the arid and semi-arid regions, with deserts as the landscape matrix, and oases as the landscape mosaic … Show more

“…In addition, since the reform and opening up, the northwest arid region has implemented a series of policies to promote oasis development [31]. The social and economic policies implemented have greatly stimulated farmers' enthusiasm, leading to large-scale land reclamation and agricultural land expansion [56].…”

“…Due to the limited data availability in early years and the insufficient coverage of the remote sensing data, it is difficult to obtain land use data spanning a long time period. Previous studies have thus mostly focused on the spatial and temporal changes of the oasis within 10-30 years [28][29][30][31][32], excluding few studies over 30 years [27,[33][34][35][36].…”

“…Therefore, research on LULC is urgent and crucial for conserving the fragile environment and realizing sustainable development in arid endorheic river basins, which has attracted attention from scholars worldwide. To the best of our knowledge, prior research on LULC in arid endorheic river basins have mainly focused on four aspects: (1) analysis of LULC evolution and its driving forces [9,[11][12][13][14]; (2) analysis of landscape pattern characteristics evolution [15][16][17][18]; (3) simulations and prediction analysis of LULC change [19][20][21]; and (4) assessing the ecological and hydrological effects caused by LULC change [8,[22][23][24]. Additionally, most of the previous studies of the driving forces behind LULC mainly focused on qualitative descriptions [11,12,24,25].…”

Additionally, most of the previous studies of the driving forces behind LULC mainly focused on qualitative descriptions [11,12,24,25]. Only a few studies have involved quantitatively analyzing the driving forces behind LULC pattern formation and LULC changes in endorheic river basins [4,26].…”
