Spatio‐temporal analysis of Nova virus, a divergent hantavirus circulating in the European mole in Belgium

Abstract: Over the last decade, the recognized host range of hantaviruses has expanded considerably with the discovery of distinct hantaviruses in shrews, moles and bats. Unfortunately, in-depth studies of these viruses have been limited. Here we describe a comprehensive analysis of the spatial distribution, genetic diversity and evolution of Nova virus, a hantavirus that has the European mole as its natural host. Our analysis demonstrated that Nova virus has a high prevalence and widespread distribution in Belgium. Whi… Show more

“…For this purpose, we used an analytical workflow already described in previous studies (e.g. Laenen et al 2016, Dellicour et al 2017 and implemented in the R package "seraphim" (Dellicour et al 2016a(Dellicour et al , 2016b. Here, we investigated the impact of the following environmental factors (Supplementary Figure S4): elevation, land cover variables ("croplands", "forests", "savannas"), inaccessibility (quantified as the time it takes to travel to the nearest major city of >50,000 inhabitants), as well as human, chicken and duck population densities.…”

“…This discovery marks the second hantavirus, in addition to Nova virus ( Kang, Bennett, et al. 2011 ; Laenen et al. 2016 ), in the European mole.…”

“…Our analytical framework investigating the impact of environmental factors on lineage dispersal velocity comprised four distinct steps, which were previously applied in other studies (e.g., Dellicour, Rose, & Pybus, ; Laenen et al, ). The first step consisted in extracting the spatio‐temporal information embedded in a collection of posterior trees obtained using continuous phylogeographic inference.…”
