Spatio-energetic cross-talk in photon counting detectors: N×N binning and sub-pixel masking

Abstract: Purpose: Smaller pixel sizes of x-ray photon counting detectors (PCDs) benefit count rate capabilities but increase cross-talk and "double-counting" between neighboring PCD pixels. When an x-ray photon produces multiple (n) counts at neighboring (sub-)pixels and they are added during postacquisition N 9 N binning process, the variance of the final PCD output-pixel will be larger than its mean. In the meantime, anti-scatter grids are placed at the pixel boundaries in most of x-ray CT systems and will decrease c… Show more

“…We assessed the soft tissue contrast visibility, which is one of the most fundamental performance indices for x-ray CT, and the study included the effect of two practical aspects -N 9 N pixel binning and the antiscatter grids. 28 The work was made possible by the model version 3.2 and it showed its potential value in various performance evaluation tests. The model will also allow us to evaluate the image quality with different conditions on CT images using repeated CT scans, each of which requires hundreds of thousands of PCD pixels per projection and hundreds of thousands of projections per scan.…”

“…For step (2), we created a look-up table for relative charge energies deposited at each of the 3 9 3 pixels given a location and a type of interaction using Photon Counting Toolkit (PcTK), which we developed previously 15,40 and had excellent agreement with another MC simulation program. 15,41 Triple and quadruple counting were also included, although the probability is very low.…”

“…This can lead to spectral distortions, including charge sharing, K-escape, fluorescence x-ray emission and pulse pileups. These distortions can further corrupt the spectral CT projection datasets with complicated noises [5]. Therefore, it is difficult to obtain higher signal-noise-ratio (SNR) projections and reconstruct satisfactory spectral CT images.…”
