Spatially Variable Rate Herbicide Application on Durum Wheat in Sicily

Abstract: Using the conventional farming system, durum wheat requires high rates of herbicide spraying. Herbicide residues can cause pollution of soil and ground water and, therefore, of the entire environment. In order to minimise the environmental impact of herbicides, a home-made system for spatially variable rate crop input application was designed and developed. This system consists of a differential global positioning system (DGPS), a portable computer, specifically developed software and a device for applying rate… Show more

“…The distribution of grass weeds in cereal crops is usually patchy. Such weed patches can be quite steady over a number of growing cycles, as can weeds such as wild oat, that can cause a 2% yield loss in cereal crops even at low density (one or two plants per m 2 ; Carrara et al, 2004). Herbicide treatments achieve the best results in terms of reducing the weed biomass, followed by hoeing and harrowing (Garcìa-Martìn et al, 2007).…”

“…The use of input resources such as fertilizers, herbicides or water (Van Alphen and Stoorvogel, 2000;Carrara et al, 2004;Chávez et al, 2010) are matched to the current demand by the crops, Published by Copernicus Publications on behalf of the European Geosciences Union.…”

“…VRT operates on the notion that application rates can be varied as equipment traverses the field thereby increasing input use and field efficiency. Carrara et al (2004) determined that even with significant variability of weed distribution, spatially varying the application of herbicides resulted in a more even yield of grain over the entire field and a 29% herbicide savings compared to the traditional uniform application of herbicides. The advantages of controlling application rate and reducing over/under application usually have associated application errors.…”
