Spatial versus verbal memory impairments in patients with fibromyalgia

Abstract: Mounting evidence suggests that individuals with fibromyalgia (FM) have impairments in general cognitive functions. However, few studies have explored the possibility of dissociation between verbal and visuospatial memory impairments in FM. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the asymmetrical impairment of cognitive functions between verbal and visuospatial memory and between short-term and long-term memory. Neuropsychological assessments were carried out on 23 female patients with FM and 2… Show more

“…Depression or depressive symptoms show associations with some of the cognitive dysfunction in FMS, but they fully explain them in only a few studies, partly explain them in others, and do not show any association in the remainder [187,191,192,198,200,206]. These discrepancies may arise because the effects of depressive symptoms appear to be domain-or even task-specific [183,198,209] and because different instruments were used for assessing depressive symptoms.…”

“…While addressed in fewer studies, certain measures of semantic memory also show impairments in FMS, including decreased verbal fluency, naming speed, and vocabulary [187,195,197]. However, recent data suggest that deficits may be more pronounced in visuospatial than in verbal memory [198,199]. Inconsistent results have been reported for episodic and implicit memory [187,195,200,201].…”

“…Buna rağmen işitsel (verbal) ve görsel-çevresel (visuo-spasyal) hafıza bozuklukları ile ilişkili bir kaç çalışma mevcuttur. Kim ve arkadaşlarının 27 yaptığı çalışmada FMS hastalarında görsel-çevresel hafızanın daha fazla bozulduğu gözlenmiştir.…”
