Spatial variation in adult sex ratio across multiple scales in the invasive golden apple snail, Pomacea canaliculata

Abstract: Adult sex ratio (ASR) has critical effects on behavior and life history and has implications for population demography, including the invasiveness of introduced species. ASR exhibits immense variation in nature, yet the scale dependence of this variation is rarely analyzed. In this study, using the generalized multilevel models, we investigated the variation in ASR across multiple nested spatial scales and analyzed the underlying causes for an invasive species, the golden apple snail Pomacea canaliculata. We p… Show more

“…Adult sex ratio has implications on fitness, breeding potential, behavior, mating system, sexual selection, life history, population demography, invasiveness of alien species and conservation biology (Le Galliard et al, 2005;Skalski, Ryding & Millspaugh, 2005;Kokko & Jennions, 2008;Liker et al, 2015;Székely, Weissing & Komdeur, 2014;Pipoly et al, 2015;Xu et al, 2016;Carmona-Isunza et al, 2017;Rodriguero et al, 2019). The sex ratio in natural populations may vary due to genetic causes, pollution and environmental factors, and may even present temporary differences (Hirai et al, 2004;Yusa, 2007;Ciparis, Henley & Voshell, 2012;Neves, Valentin & Figueiredo, 2013;Carmona-Isunza et al, 2017).…”

“…Such variables, particularly factors with potentially higher explanatory power need to be explored and included into spatial models in the future, in order to perfect further spatial models. We would also like to investigate different spatial scales [ 41 ], as well as improve the degree of fit of the models used by increasing sample sizes and the number of villages, with the expectation that these parameters might affect the finding.…”

“…The golden apple snail ( Pomacea canaliculata ; Gastropoda, Ampullariidae) is native to freshwater wetlands of South America and has been introduced widely into Asia since the 1980s (Hayes et al, ; Xu, Fang et al, ). In its introduced range, it has caused significant damage to agricultural production (Cowie, ), wetland plants (Fang, Wong, Lin, Lan, & Qiu, ), and ecosystem functioning (Carlsson, Brönmark, & Hansson, ) and is listed among the “Top 100” invasive species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (Lowe, Browne, Boudjelas, & Poorter, ).…”
