Spatial variability of throughfall chemistry and selected soil properties as influenced by stem distance in a mature Norway spruce (Picea abies, Karst.) stand

Abstract: Our aims were to investigate the spatial variability of throughfall chemistry and soil parameters as influenced by stem distance and to evaluate the implication of the observed systematic and random patterns for the sampling strategy. One hundred throughfall samplers with a sampling area of 106 cm 2 each were established in a systematic grid around 5 trees in a mature Norway spruce; site of the Fichtelgebirge (Germany). One hundred soil cores were taken with an auger of 50 cm 2 next to the throughfall samplers.… Show more

“…Throughfall shows less spatial variation in periods with high rain intensities (Bouten et al, 1992 Table 3. (Spatial) coefficients of variation (CV, %) of throughfall in this and four other studies in coniferous forests: Pedersen (1992), Beier et al (1993), Seiler and Matzner (1995) and Whelan et al (1998). CVs of ions in Pedersen (1992) and Seiler and Matzner (1995) refer to time-average concentrations; all other studies refer to amounts.…”

“…Trees can create gradients in soil moisture [4][5][6], temperature [7,8], texture [9], carbon (C) and nutrient accumulation and turnover [10][11][12], understory species composition through spatially distinct effects via litter accumulation [1,12,13], stemflow and throughfall [14,15], light and precipitation interception [16][17][18] and root distribution [8,19].…”

“…Due to the generally large spatial heterogeneity of the soilsolution chemistry in forest soils, particularly at small scales (Mellert et al, 2008), the experimental design of the soil-solution sampling should be carefully adjusted to site conditions (Manderscheid and Matzner, 1995;Seiler and Matzner, 1995). In this study, the number and spatial distribution of suction cups were stratified on the basis of forest-cover density and tree-species composition, but without covering the whole range of situations of base saturation in the watershed for which upscaling models have been performed (Figs.…”
