In this paper, the contents of four typical metals (Pb, Cd, Hg, and As) in asparagus, water, and soil from Chongming Island were quantitatively determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The contents of these metals in asparagus showed a common rule of Pb > As > Cd > Hg in different harvest seasons and regions. Significant seasonal differences were found in the contents by difference analysis, but no obvious regional differences were observed. Furthermore, the asparagus did not accumulate these four metals from the soil in Chongming Island by the assessment of bio-concentration factor. The asparagus was proved safe by the analysis of single-factor pollution index and Nemerow pollution index. Through combining the analysis of the above indexes and the geological accumulation index, we found that 51.62% of soil samples were mildly polluted by cadmium. The results of health risk analysis showed that the risk value of children was higher than that of adults under oral exposure, but the four metals in asparagus possessed no obvious risk to health. The above assessments illustrate that the daily consumption of asparagus in Chongming Island will not cause potential health impacts. It is of benefit to ensure the quality and economic interests of asparagus planting in Chongming Island through the investigation of this study.

An extensive study of the spatial distribution characteristics of potentially harmful elements (PHEs) in tea (Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze) garden soils and ecological risk assessment at An'xi County, the birthplace of oolong tea in China, was implemented. A total of 78 soil samples were examined to determine the concentration of five PHEs (As, Cd, Cr, Hg and Pb), soil organic matter and pH by using geostatistical approaches combined with geographical information system analysis. All PHEs presented in the study area were slightly higher than their background values for provincial and national standards except Cr. Moreover, ecological risk assessment of PHEs in the tea garden soils at An'xi County was performed by means of the Håkanson method. The average ecological potential risk index (Er) of the five PHEs followed a descending order of Cd > Hg > Pb > As > Cr, and suggested a moderate ecological risk in the study area.

The spatial distribution of rainfall is paramount for water‐related research such as hydrological modelling and watershed management. The use of different interpolation methods in the same area may cause large differences and deviations from the real spatial distribution of rainfall; these differences depend on the type of chosen model, its mode of geographical management and the resolution used. In this study, different algorithms of spatial interpolation of rainfall in a region of southern Italy (Calabria) were applied and the results of geostatistical and deterministic approaches were compared in order to choose the best method for reproducing the actual precipitation field surface. In particular, inverse distance weighting (IDW), ordinary kriging (OK), kriging with external drift (KED), ordinary cokriging (COK) and empirical Bayesian kriging (EBK) were applied to produce the monthly rainfall maps of Calabria. The maps were obtained from a rainfall data set of 129 monthly rainfall series (about one station per 117 km2) collected in the period 1951–2006. Cross‐validation and visual analysis of the precipitation maps were performed to examine the results of these different models. Results clearly indicate that geostatistical methods outperform inverse distance. Moreover, among these methods, the kriging with an external drift showed the smallest error of prediction.
