“…Tapie et al [20] determined the sum of indicator PCBs + PCB 118 in eels from the Gironde values ranging between 1,141 and 5,746 ng/g lw. High concentrations were as well reported from eels in a Belgian canal which reached up to 8,700 ng/g ww [34] and from Flemish waters, where eels reach concentrations between 78 and 4,812 ng/g lw [35].…”

“…Concentrations of DLCs in naturally-spawned eel eggs have never been measured (Byer et al, 2012), but they can be estimated from concentrations in tissues of sexually-maturing, migrating silver eels. Ratios of gonad/whole body concentrations averaged 1.4 for both PCBs and total lipids in migrating silver eels from the SLR estuary , reflecting the transfer of hydrophobic POPs and lipids to developing oocytes.…”

“…In 2008, all eels but two were frozen immediately after capture, and size data, otoliths, and tissue samples were collected when thawed, prior to homogenization; size data for the remaining two fish were collected fresh and after freezing and thawing. The effects of freezing and thawing on fish size in 2008 were assessed by measuring weights and lengths of 10 large yellow eels sampled from the upper St. Lawrence River (Byer et al, 2012), and the two eels collected in the present study, before the fish were frozen and after they were thawed for chemical analyses. There was a very strong correlation between fresh weight and thawed weight (r 2 = 0.999, n = 12, p b 0.0001), with frozen and thawed eels 4.0 ± 0.75% lighter than fresh eels.…”

“…In recent year, aquatic organisms are regarded as good bioindicators and selected for monitoring the levels and effects of POPs in the environment (Wang et al 2007(Wang et al , 2008Bustnes et al 2012;Byer et al 2013;Carpenter et al 2014). Among them, golden thread (Nemipterus virgatus) is a carnivorous fish feeding mainly on crustacea, cephalopoda, and small fish, which is widespread in the SCS and belongs to non-migratory fish with relative narrow home range.…”
