Spatial-Temporal Variability of Droughts during Two Cropping Seasons in Sri Lanka and Its Possible Mechanisms

Abstract: Drought management in Sri Lanka is mostly limited to relief provision due to the shortage of scientific details to develop sufficient drought risk management. Therefore, spatio-temporal variability of droughts in two cropping seasons, Yala (May-August) and Maha (October-March) in Sri Lanka, have been investigated using the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). The SPEI-4 at August (SPEI-4 August ) shows an apparent decadal variation over wet, intermediate, and dry climate regions in the c… Show more

“…In tropical countries, investigating the efect of monsoon winds circulation on atmospheric pollutants is signifcant [1] because wind speed and direction signifcantly determine the particle concentration and distributions as they relocate from the major source [37,[69][70][71]. Tese facts highlighted that wind speed and direction is the key meteorological component for observed seasonal variation of pollutant concentrations in two cities.…”

“…Two major monsoon seasons based on the wind direction can be identifed as northeastern monsoon (NEM) (from December to February) and southwestern monsoon (SWM) (from May to September). Tese two major monsoons bring rainfall to northern and southern Sri Lanka, respectively [37,38]. In addition, Sri Lanka has two other intermonsoons in between the above two major monsoons to bring signifcant rainfall.…”

“…This special issue was motivated by the recent World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) workshop on Extremes in Climate Prediction Ensembles (ExCPns) 25-27 October 2021. Extreme weather and climate events have significant impacts on society and the economy (Lee et al 2022;Oh et al 2022;Ranalkar et al 2022;Shelton et al 2022;Zhao et al 2022). These events are also projected to become more intense and frequent in a globally warmer world Liu et al 2023).…”
