Spatial-temporal trends and risk of suicide in Central Brazil: an ecological study contrasting indigenous and non-indigenous populations

Abstract: Objective: To examine spatial-temporal distribution and risk of suicide, as well as trends in suicide mortality rates, in the indigenous and non-indigenous population of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Methods: Data were obtained from the Information Department of the Brazilian Unified Health System. Deaths recorded as voluntary self-inflicted injuries (ICD-10 codes X60.0 to X84.9) were considered suicide. Suicide rates were estimated and adjusted by age in the population 4 9 years of age. “…These methods are useful not only for studies of infectious diseases but also for studies of non-infectious diseases or events like suicide. Worldwide there have been several reports of suicide cluster analyses [14][15][16][17][18][19]. We performed spatial cluster analyses using several methods as well as examined related factors using the CAR model including spatial smoothing.…”

“…As for the application related to spatial epidemiology, there have been several reports of suicide cluster analyses worldwide [14][15][16][17][18][19]. Namely, a study in New South Wales, Australia, between 2005 and 2013 [14] demonstrated the importance of examining geographical variations in spatial clustering of fatal and non-fatal suicide attempts.…”

“…Analysing the maps of Indigenous homicide, we highlight its potentially high incidence in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, more specifically the south of the state, with a possible epicentre in the municipality of Dourados. This area was also the focus of recent studies revealing high rates of Indigenous suicides 20,21 . Among 'Guarani Kaiowá' and 'Nhandeva' groups from Mato Grosso do Sul that live in this area, between 2000 and 2007, the mortality rate due to suicide was 118.4/100,000.…”

“…The southern part of Mato Grosso do Sul is marked by land conflicts, commonly violent, between the indigenous population and the agricultural sector, the economic base of the state. [23][24][25][26][27] This violent oppression further aggravates the vulnerability of the indigenous population living there and may worsen their socioeconomic condition. In addition, the border with Paraguay is one of the main routes of entry of drugs in Brazil.…”
