Identifying relationships among multiple ecosystem services (ESs) at different scales and the factors affecting such relationships is the foundation for sustainable ecosystem management. A case study was conducted in the Sihu Lake Basin, an agricultural basin in Central China, to examine the interactions among ESs across different scales and the responses to landscape pattern changes (2000–2020). The results indicate that (1) agricultural land and wetlands were converted into construction land and gradually decreased in size; forestland and artificial channels gradually increased in size. (2) ESs had spatial heterogeneity in their strength at the grid and county scales. (3) Most relationships between ESs were synergistic at the grid and county scales, and most correlations increased as the scale increased due to landscape consistency. (4) The landscape metrics explained approximately 45.56–61.06% of the variations in ESs, and the main influencing factor was agricultural land. Our results demonstrated that the construction of rivers and channels, dense and widely distributed agricultural land and construction land were more positively correlated with increasing crop production and nitrogen export, whereas forestland exhibited a stronger contribution to increasing carbon storage and water yield. These findings explore appropriate management methods for agricultural development and ecological conservation in agricultural basins.

After the 2004 tsunami, Banda Aceh experienced rapid urbanization to the south and east of the city as the city grew further away from the coastline. As a result, the urban area grew beyond the city boundary into Aceh Besar Regency, especially in Darul Imarah and Ingin Jaya sub-districts. Hence, these sub-districts experienced rapid development, characterized by extensive conversion of agricultural land into built-up areas. Therefore, uncontrolled development in peri-urban areas will lead to urban sprawl causing negative environmental, economic, and social impacts. This study aims to study the level of urban sprawl and examine the urban growth pattern in peri-urban areas, focusing on Darul Imarah and Ingin Jaya sub-districts. This research used scoring analysis and spatial analysis. First, Maximum Likelihood Classification (MLC) was used to identify built-up areas in 2005 and 2020. Then, the urban growth pattern was analyzed using Landscape Expansion Index (LEI). The classification of urban sprawl was analyzed using five variables: population density, building density, distance to the city center, development within reach of road network, and leapfrog development patterns. The results showed that 33 villages (40%) in the study area were identified as sprawl. In addition, seven villages (21.2%) were classified as high-level urban sprawl, nine villages (27.3%) as medium level, and 17 villages (51.5%) as low level. Urban sprawl development was dominated by the ribbon development pattern (49.6%), concentric pattern 40.8%, and leapfrog pattern 9.6%. The ribbon development occurred along the main road, while the concentric pattern occurred around the current urban subcenter. The urban sprawl has caused negative implications such as higher car ownership and the loss of agricultural land. This research suggests Banda Aceh City and Aceh Besar Regency governments cooperate to control the urban sprawl and its negative impact by establishing a more sustainable urban policy and strengthening regional cooperation.

The continuous expansion of urban land has led to massive encroachment upon cropland. To examine the impacts of urban expansion on the loss and fragmentation of cropland in China’s nine major grain production areas (MGPAs), we used standard deviation ellipse, land use transfer matrix, land use dynamic degree, and landscape metric to explore the spatio-temporal evolutions, mutual transfer, and landscape patterns of cropland and urban land. The results show the following: (1) From 1995 to 2018, the areas of cropland in MGPAs showed a trend of “short-term increase—long-term decrease—short-term increase”, while that of urban land grew continuously; (2) Urban expansion is the main cause of cropland loss. The cropland area converted to urban land accounts for a large proportion (49.26%) of the total transfer of cropland to other land types, especially in the densely populated, rapidly urbanizing and industrializing Taihu Lake Plain, Jianghuai Region, and Pearl River Delta; (3) In most MGPAs, urban expansion has led to fragmentation of cropland, especially in the Pearl River Delta, as indicated by the significant change of patch density. However, in the Sanjiang Plain and Songnen Plain, a less pronounced or even reduced cropland fragmentation was observed due to the significant conversion of other land types to cropland under specific land policies. From these results, we suggest that the government should regulate the encroachment of urban land on cropland and the transfer of natural land to it, and encourage the rural land consolidation to increase the cropland.
