Spatial statistical optics and spatial correlation holography: A review

Abstract: Classical statistical optics is revisited with the aim of introducing the concept of spatial statistical optics that places particular focus and special emphasis on spatial statistics of the optical field, rather than on their temporal statistics. The principles of emerging technology of statistical correlation holography based on spatial statistical optics are reviewed, and their unique capabilities for coherence and polarization shaping as well as synthesizing stochastic optical fields with desired statistic… Show more

“…The phase imaging is essential to examine the complex-valued object. However, when the object is obscured by the scattering medium or illuminated by a random light [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15], recovery of the non-stochastic object through phase imaging is a challenging task. Such issues have been a matter of investigation since long, and several techniques such as adaptive optics [9], correlation optics [10], and phase conjugation [15] have been proposed.…”

“…On the other hand, over the past few years, correlation holography (CH) has emerged as a promising approach [10,34,35]. The CH reconstructs the object as a distribution of two point spatial coherence.…”

“…The last list could be extended, but the number clearly reflects some obstacles in the implementation of THz holography. The absence of interest is hardly the cause as holography in the visible light still attracts growing attention and fields of its application are gradually expanding [27]- [30]. Why is not the same observed in the THz range, in which the imaging suffers from strong diffraction, and holographic image reconstruction could be a solution?…”

“…Our interest here is the static spatial statistical properties of the modulated electric fields [11][12]. After replacing the conventional time average by spatial average for the ensemble average in Eq.…”
