Spatial Pattern and Habitat Requirements of Galaxias maculatus in the Last Un-Interrupted Large River of Patagonia: A Baseline for Management

Abstract: The relationship between the native Galaxias maculatus and environmental variables was studied in 52 sites located along 306 km of the main stemof the Santa Cruz River, the second largest river in Argentinean Patagonia. The abundance varied along the river, with three general sections clearly defined: upstream with minimum abundance increasing towards midstream and downstream areas. Distance to the sea and river wet width which were negatively significantly associated with abundance, and maximum depth explained… Show more

“…Our work was in part facilitated by the general homogeneity of the Santa Cruz River, which has been previously recognized by Tagliaferro et al (2013Tagliaferro et al ( , 2014a, when reporting data on macroinvertebrates and native fish. The Santa Cruz has no secondor third-order tributaries, where the highest abundance of juvenile salmonids is found in other rivers around the world (Murphy et al, 1989;Boughton et al, 2009).…”

“…The Santa Cruz is a remote river, far from populated areas, with very low incidence of industrial and urban pollution along its main course. Fish were captured using standard single‐pass electrofishing procedures by a Smith‐Root LR‐24 electrofisher set to a frequency of 90 Hz and a pulse width of 3 ms (Tagliaferro, Quiroga, & Pascual, 2014). Fish were euthanized with an overdose of MS222 and collected in sterile containers, in which they were transported and were kept refrigerated until processing.…”
