Spatial modelling of avalanches by application of GIS on selected slopes of the Western Tatra Mts. and Belianske Tatra Mts., Slovakia

Abstract: The avalanches represent a significant and very dynamic process within the Tatra high-mountain landscape. Undoubtedly avalanche run-out distances play a key role in land use planning within avalanche prone areas. The Žiarska valley and Predné Meďodoly valley are considered as one of the most avalanche prone valleys in Tatra Mts. This environment represents an excellent opportunity for studying and modelling extreme avalanche run-outs. Primarily avalanche release zones were estimated by using an existing model … Show more

“…(Boltižiar 2022). Snow avalanches are a special phenomenon (Rączkowska et al 2016a;Boltižiar et al 2016). The morphodynamic phenomena of the highmountain landscape are characterized by high dynamics and frequency of geomorphic processes, extreme disturbance effects on the landscape, which are remarkably reflected also in the changes of the vegetation patterns.…”

“…Due to the higher degree of results relevance, M. Žiak [50] was able to develop the concept of the avalanche geographical information system, representing the updated digital version of the avalanche cadastre, by applying geo-information systems and remote sensing methods. Over the last decade, a large number of articles have been published which have made significant contributions to a better understanding of the processes associated with avalanche issues [51][52][53][54][55][56][57].…”

“…Besides, the first geomorphological research and lake mapping in the High Tatras highlighted these lake infilling processes (Rehman 1892, Schaffer 1930, Szaflarski 1933 and they were also thoroughly covered in the first comprehensive relief studies and detailed geomorphological mapping of both Slovak and Polish mountain aspects. Authors have also provided indirect evidence of decreased lake volume and water surface area caused by the High Tatras morphodynamic processes (Lukniš 1973, Hreško and Boltižiar 2001, Hreško et al 2003, Gregor 2005, Gregor and Pacl 2005, Hreško et al 2008, Kapusta et al 2010, Boltižiar et al 2016, Gallik and Bolešová 2016, Kłapyta et al 2016.…”
