Abstract:A new channel for optical communication is described, in which the energy distribution among the spatial modes of a laser beam is modulated. The number and strength of the modes directly influences the spatial coherence of a beam, which can then be detected with a simple interferometer. The transmitter is an electro-optic device that allows one or two modes to propagate depending on the logic state. The distribution of the energy among the allowed modes is independent of the overall intensity, thereby giving a… Show more
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
