Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explain the effects of innovation, specialisation, qualifications and sectoral structure on the resilience of German regions (municipal level) facing the Great Recession in 2008/2009. Design/methodology/approach To calculate the effects of various variables on the resilience of German regions against the Great Recession, the authors use quantile regressions. To measure resilience, the authors create a number of indexes representing different parts of the economy: resistance performance index, recovery performance index, shift-share resistance index, shift-share recovery index, manufacturing resistance index, manufacturing recovery index, service resistance index and service recovery index. Findings The results of this study confirm that locations with employment growth before the crisis and with a good industry structure show better employment dynamics during and after the crisis. The authors find evidence for positive relationship between innovativeness, qualification, the share of the service sector, specialisation and resistance. The authors obtain positive results for related variety and both resistance and recovery. The share of the manufacturing sector only shows a positive relationship with recovery. Originality/value The authors expand the existing literature in three aspects: First, instead of using regions as observation units, the authors conduct the analyses on the basis of municipalities and their surroundings. By doing so, the authors reduce the modifiable area unit problem because the authors do not rely on regions defined for administrative reasons. Second, the authors apply quantile regressions to detect nonlinear effects. Third, in addition to the resilience of the whole economy, the authors also study the resilience of the manufacturing and service sectors separately and examine the resilience of the local shift effect.

Ports are some of the most significant entry points for Greek tourism investments and can be characterized as “development tools” for the country, both at the local and national level. The blue economy is a recent example of economic development, globally promoted as a way to achieve sustainability in maritime and coastal areas. Linaria Port has been accredited by the United Nations as a “The blue port with a shade of green,” constituting an environmentally sustainable community capable of promoting responsible environmental behavior both within the local community and among tourists. The port has been highly competitive in achieving high sustainability standards and mainly operates in ways that complement environmental quality. It has presented innovative, competitive, and sustainable solutions since 2010. This research aimed to collect primary and secondary data on tourist preferences to evaluate these services. Evaluation was conducted through anonymous questionnaires divided into two parts: the first part concerned the tourist profile, and the second part concerned tourists’ opinions on the services and facilities of the Port and the island. In the evaluation of the port, 91% of respondents rated the marina positively compared to other ports in the country, while 77% ranked the port of Skyros in a good position compared to other European or international ports. The overall quality of the tourist product was positively evaluated at 89%, while 90% of visitors were generally satisfied with the overall services offered. Moreover, 95% would return to Skyros within the next years.

El objetivo de este artículo es estudiar los efectos que, a nivel regional, ha tenido la pandemia relacionada con la COVID-19 en el mercado peer-to-peer (p2p) de alojamientos turísticos en España. Nos basaremos en los datos que publica el INE a partir de la información suministrada por plataformas digitales que operan en dicho mercado. La técnica utilizada será el análisis shift-share que, en nuestro caso, consistirá en la descomposición del decremento que han experimentado las pernoctaciones en 2020, respecto a 2019, en las distintas Comunidades Autónomas españolas. Los resultados confirman que las pernoctaciones disminuyeron en primer año de la pandemia casi un 60 % en el mercado p2p en España con un impacto desigual a nivel regional. Aunque en todas las Comunidades Autónomas disminuyó el número de pernoctaciones las diferencias son apreciables. Asimismo, en todas las Comunidades ha aumentado el peso que representan las pernoctaciones de los residentes en España respecto al total, lo cual es compatible con la hipótesis de que los turistas españoles han sustituido sus viajes al extranjero por los realizados dentro del país. Por otro lado, la especialización en determinados mercados emisores no ha tenido influencia en la capacidad de una región para decrecer menos en ese mercado que la media nacional, es decir, no existe, con carácter general, una relación entre especialización y ventaja competitiva. No obstante, Galicia, Cantabria y Madrid sí han decrecido menos que la media nacional en los mercados en los que estaban especializadas y más en los que no estaban especializadas.
