Spatial distribution of mollusks in the intertidal zone of sheltered beaches in southeastern of Brazil

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The spatial distribution of mollusks in the intertidal zone was examined monthly from August 1995 through July 1997, in Enseada, Barra Velha and Araçá beaches in southeastern of Brazil. One study sector was selected in Enseada and Barra Velha, and two sectors in Araçá (Araçá I and Araçá II). The sectors were 10 m wide and equivalent in length to the width of the intertidal zone. Each sector was divided into three horizontal levels: lower, middle and upper, where the samples were taken with a cylinder… Show more

“…This species has a high nutritional value and supplies food for local fishermen and tourists (Amaral et al 2010). Anomalocardia brasiliana was excluded from the present study because it has been investigated in other studies (Narchi 1974;Arruda-Soares et al 1982;Boehs 2000;Arruda and Amaral 2003;Amaral 2010;Boehs et al 2010).…”

“…First, specimens were collected at Engenho D'água beach with sediment composed by medium-sized sand grains, sludge and rocks whereas those from Araçá bay lived in soft sandy and muddy sediments. Hence, there may be an influence of environmental factors, such as sediment characteristics, on shell traits (Anderson 1994(Anderson , 2001Arruda and Amaral 2003), although this has not been specifically demonstrated in C. caribaea yet. The second important factor that can contribute to corbulid shell variation is its peculiar ontogeny.…”

“…However, the density is higher than in the São Sebastião Channel (0.12–0.16 ind. m −2 ) in Southeastern Brazil (Arruda & Amaral ). The density of T. mactroides tends to oscillate over unknown time intervals.…”
