), and low values in summer (7.1 ± 1.0 M NO 3 , 1.22 ± 0.06 M PO 4 , and 16.0 ± 2.1 M Si(OH) 4 ), related to vertically stratified water column conditions ( = 150-223 J m -3 ). In contrast, below 200 m the seasonal variability of the three nutrient concentrations was reduced. The hydrographic analysis indicated that the wintertime surface nutrient enrichment was due to an intensification of the water column mixing, which vertically transported Subtropical Subsurface Water (SSW, cold and nutrient-enriched) to the surface of BC. In contrast, nutrient impoverishment in summertime was due to biological consumption combined with the stratification of the water column, which reduced the vertical flow of SSW and, consequently, the supply of nutrients to the surface of this system. The N:P and Si:N ratios and an excess of PO 4 > 0.65 M in surface waters indicated that NO 3 was the potential limiting nutrient for primary production in this oceanographic province of the Gulf of California.Key words: nutrients, enrichment, vertical mixing, Ballenas Channel. RESUMEN.Se realizaron tres cruceros oceanográficos en la región del canal de Ballenas (CB) durante el invierno de 2002, la primavera de 2003 y el verano de 2004, con el objetivo de estudiar el impacto de la mezcla vertical de la columna de agua () sobre la concentración superficial de los nutrientes inorgánicos disueltos (NO 3 , PO 4 y Si(OH) 4 ). Las concentraciones promedio de nutrientes integrados en los primeros 100 m del CB mostraron una clara variación estacional, con valores altos en el invierno (18.2 ± 1.1 M de NO 3 , 2.36 ± 0.08 M de PO 4 y 35.4 ± 3.2 M de Si(OH) 4 ), asociados a condiciones de mezcla intensa de la columna de agua ( = 0.7-16 J m -3 ), y valores bajos en el verano (7.1  1.0 M de NO 3, 1.22 ± 0.06 M de PO 4 y 16.0 ± 2.1 M de Si(OH) 4 ), asociados a condiciones de estratificación de la columna de agua ( = 150-223 J m -3 ). En contraste, por debajo de los 200 m la variabilidad estacional de la concentración de los tres nutrientes fue muy pequeña. El análisis hidrográfico indicó que el enriquecimiento superficial de nutrientes en invierno se debió a la intensificación de la mezcla de la columna de agua, la cual transportó verticalmente el Agua Subsuperficial Subtropical (ASS, fría y rica en nutrientes) hacia la superficie del CB. En contraste, el empobrecimiento de nutrientes durante el verano se debió a que el consumo por la actividad biológica se combinó con la estratificación de la columna de agua, la cual redujo el flujo vertical del ASS y, en consecuencia, el aporte de nutrientes hacia la superficie de este sistema. Las razones N:P, Si:N y un exceso de PO 4 > 0.65 M en las aguas superficiales indicaron que el NO 3 fue el nutriente potencialmente limitante para la producción primaria de esta provincia oceanográfica del golfo de California.Palabras clave: nutrientes, enriquecimiento, mezcla vertical, canal de Ballenas.

The pen shell (Atrina maura) is a filter-feeder bivalve that may accumulate metals in its body. The objective of this study was to determine seasonal concentrations of copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), arsenic (As), zinc (Zn), and mercury (Hg) in soft tissue and muscle of A. maura cultivated in a farm located in the southeastern coast of the Gulf of California from summer 2011 to summer 2012. Except for Cu, the higher metal concentrations were found during the dry season (winter 2011-spring 2012). The mean values in soft tissue fluctuated from 0.064 ± 0.01 µg/g (dry weight [dw]) for Hg to 485.66 ± 71.12 µg/g (dw) for Zn, while for muscle they varied from 0.058 ± 0.03 µg/g (dw) for Hg to 64.83 ± 4.90 µg/g (dw) for Zn. Concentrations of cadmium (18.15 µg/g in soft tissue and 1.82 µg/g in muscle, wet weight [ww]) and lead (2.31 µg/g in soft tissue, ww) exceeded the permissible limits (36.3, 3.64, and 2.31 times, respectively) recommended by the sanitary regulations of the official mexican standards. The results suggest that variation of metal levels in cultivated pen shell could be influenced by seasonality and anthropogenic activities such as agriculture and aquaculture developed around the culture zone. Continual monitoring of metals in farmed pen shell is recommended.Palabras clave: concentración de metales, variación estacional, bivalvos, cultivo, monitoreo RESUMEN El callo de hacha (Atrina maura) es un bivalvo filtrador que puede acumular metales en su cuerpo. El objetivo de este trabajo fue determinar las concentraciones estacionales de cobre (Cu), cromo (Cr), cadmio (Cd), níquel (Ni), plomo (Pb), arsénico (As), zinc (Zn) y mercurio (Hg) en tejido suave y músculo de A. maura proveniente de una granja del sureste del Golfo de California, del verano de 2011 al verano de 2012. Las concentraciones más altas de todos los metales, con excepción del Cu, se encontraron en la estación de secas (invierno 2011-primavera 2012). Los valores promedio (peso seco) en A.M. Góngora-Gómez et al. 58el tejido suave fluctuaron de 0.064 ± 0.01 µg/g para Hg a 485.66 ± 71.12 µg/g para Zn, mientras que en músculo variarion de 0.058 ± 0.03 µg/g para Hg a 64.83 ± 4.90 µg/g para Zn. Las concentraciones promedio en peso húmedo para cadmio (18.15 µg/g en tejido suave y 1.82 µg/g en músculo) y plomo (2.31 µg/g en tejido suave) excedieron los límites permitidos (36.3, 3.64 y 2.31 veces, respectivamente) por la regulación sanitaria de las Normas Oficiales Mexicanas. Los resultados sugieren que la variación de metales encontrada en el callo de hacha pudo estar influida por la estacionalidad y las actividades antropogénicas desarrolladas en los alrededores de la zona de cultivo, como agricultura y acuacultura. Se recomiendan monitoreos continuos de metales en callo de hacha cultivado.

ABSTRACT. In the Midriff Islands region (MIR) of the Gulf of California (Mexico), tidal mixing plays a very important role in the distribution of chemical properties. Although the temporal variability of the water masses is linked to the ocean dynamics of this region, its importance has not been considered. This work estimates the effect of water mass dynamics on the spatial distribution and seasonal variation of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in the region, with special emphasis on the Ballenas Channel, during winter 2002, spring 2003, and summer 2004. Gulf of California Water (GCW) was found throughout the area in the first 100 m. Below, Subtropical Subsurface Water (SSW) filled the Delfín, Salsipuedes, and Tiburón basins, while to the southeast it was found between 150 and 350 m. Pacific Intermediate Water did not cross the sills. SSW enriches the surface water of the MIR with DIC when it increases in volume and when mixed with GCW by tidal effects. This contribution decreases towards summertime, when SSW sinks and the volume of GCW increases. In winter, GCW had three water types associated with oceanographic mixing processes and in combination with the presence of SSW. There was a strong DIC vs temperature relationship, which can be applied to analyze the carbon dynamics in the MIR, both at the surface using satellite imagery and vertically to simulate physical processes.Key words: dissolved inorganic carbon, Gulf of California, vertical mixing, Ballenas Channel, coastal DIC studies. RESUMEN.En la región de las grandes islas (RGI) del golfo de California la mezcla por mareas juega un papel muy importante en la distribución de propiedades disueltas. Aunque la variabilidad temporal de las masas de agua está ligada con la dinámica oceanográfica de la región, su importancia no ha sido considerada. En este trabajo se estima el efecto de la dinámica de las masas de agua sobre la distribución espacial y variación estacional del carbono inorgánico disuelto (CID) en la RGI, con especial énfasis en el canal de Ballenas, durante el invierno de 2002, la primavera de 2003 y el verano de 2004. El Agua del Golfo de California (AGC) se encontró en toda la superficie en los primeros 100 m de profundidad. Por debajo del AGC, el Agua Subsuperficial Subtropical (ASS) llenó las cuencas Delfín, Salsipuedes y Tiburón, mientras que en el sureste se encontró entre 150 y 350 m. El Agua Intermedia del Pacifico no atravesó los umbrales. Se encontró que el ASS enriquece de CID las aguas superficiales de la RGI cuando aumenta su volumen y cuando se mezcla con el AGC por efecto de las mareas. El aporte disminuye hacia el verano, cuando el ASS se hunde al mismo tiempo que el volumen de AGC aumenta. En invierno, el AGC presentó tres tipos de agua asociadas a los procesos de mezcla y en combinación con la presencia de ASS.
