1. With animal species disappearing at unprecedented rates, we need an efficient monitoring method providing reliable estimates of population density and abundance, critical for the assessment of population status and trend.2. We deployed 160 camera traps (CTs) systematically over 743 locations covering 17,127 km 2 of evergreen lowland rainforest of Salonga National Park, block South, Democratic Republic of the Congo. We evaluated the applicability of CT distance sampling (CTDS) to species different in size and behaviour. To improve precision of estimates, we evaluated two methods estimating species' availability ('A') for detection by CTs.3. We recorded 16,700 video clips, revealing 43 different animal taxa. We estimated densities of 14 species differing in physical, behavioural and ecological traits, and extracted species-specific availability from available video footage using two methods (a) 'ACa' (Cappelle et al. [2019] Am. J. Primatol., 81, e22962) and (b) 'ARo' (Rowcliffe et al. [2014] Methods Ecol. Evol. 5, 1170). With sample sizes being large enough, we found minor differences between ACa and ARo in estimated densities. In contrast, low detectability and reactivity to the camera were main sources of bias. CTDS proved efficient for estimating density of homogenously rather than patchily distributed species.4. Synthesis and applications. Understanding the factors influencing the spatial distribution of elephants can provide insight into the dynamics of their populations, thus helping elephant and habitat conservation efforts. Elephant habitat selection is an important key to knowing the existing conditions for the potential availability of elephant feed. This study aims to determine the spatial distribution of elephant populations and the characteristics of habitat selection as a route in the all-around forest area of Aceh Timur district. This research was carried out in the Serbajadi-lokop forest area. We observed areas that had high activity. The method used is direct observation of the 500 m long transect path on each transect and literature study to obtain information about the selection of elephant habitat areas. The results show that 22 areas are used as resting sites and elephant habitat areas. In the area, several types of plants with forest cover range from 25%-90%, the height of the land varies from 0-400 meters above sea level and the vegetation type consists of 14 primary forest locations, 6 secondary and 2 Plantation Areas . Overall, it can be concluded that the ecology of wild elephants in all-around forest areas has diverse characteristics and is in the lowlands and elephants have the selection of certain areas to rest within the forest area.

Le Parc National de Taï (PNT) reste le dernier refuge pour plusieurs espèces animales, vu la dégradation des massifs forestiers à l’Ouest de la Côte d’Ivoire. Cependant, très peu d’études menées dans le PNT ont concerné les carnivores, en générale et les petits et moyens carnivores, en particulier. La présente étude avait pour objectif de déterminer la diversité spécifique de la population des petits et moyens carnivores du PNT en vue d’une planification de leurs conservations durables. Pour atteindre cet objectif, des pièges photographiques ont été installés de mars 2019 à février 2020. Au cours de la période d’étude, sept espèces de petits carnivores et trois espèces de moyens carnivores ont été détectées. Pour les petits carnivores, les espèces dont les taux de captures étaient les plus élevés étaient la mangouste des marais Atilax paludinosus (2,23 observations/nuitspièges) suivi de la genette de johnston Genetta johnstoni (1,83 observations/nuits-pièges) et la mangouste brune Crossarchus obscurus (0,81 observations/nuits-pièges). Pour les moyens carnivores, les espèces dont les taux de captures étaient les plus élevés étaient la civette d'Afrique Civettictis civetta (1,15 observations/ nuits-pièges) et le ratel Mellivora capensis (0,27 observations/nuits-pièges). Les résultats de cette étude montrent l’importance du PNT, en raison de cette riche biodiversité. English title: Contributions of camera traps to the study of the diversity of small and medium carnivores in Taï National Park (South-West Côte d’Ivoire) The Taï National Park (TNP) remains to be the last refuge for several animal species, given the degradation of the forest massifs in the west of Côte d'Ivoire. However, very few studies carried out in TNP have focused on carnivores in general and small and medium-sized carnivores in particular. The aim of this study was to determine the specific diversity of the population of small and medium-sized carnivores in the TNP with a view to planning their sustainable conservation. To achieve this objective, photographic traps were installed from March 2019 to February 2020. During the study period, seven species of small carnivores and three species of medium carnivores were detected. For small carnivores, the species with the highest capture rates were the Marsh mongoose Atilax paludinosus (2.23 observations/trap nights), followed by the Johnston's genet Genetta johnstoni (1.83 observations/trap nights) and the Common cusimanse Crossarchus obscurus (0.81 observations/trap nights). For medium carnivores, the species with the highest catch rates were the African civet Civettictis civetta (1.15 observations/trap nights) and the Honey badger Mellivora capensis (0.27 observations/trap nights). The results of this study show the importance of the TNP, given its rich biodiversity.
