Spatial distribution and period of activity of the forest elephant (<i>Loxodonta africana cyclotis</i>) at Taï National Park, south western Côte d'Ivoire

Abstract: Objective: This study aims at determining the spatial distribution and period of activities of the forest elephant (Loxodonta africana cyclotis) at Taï National Park (TNP) to contribute to its conservation. Methodology and results: Observations of elephants at different locations and time periods were recorded by using 87 camera traps with date and time-stamped settings. Cameras were installed following a systematic placement approach, and their geographic coordinates were recorded using a GPS. After 120 days … Show more

“…For example, we observed elephants from 20 capture events only, revealing activity in 11 of 24‐hr intervals (Figure 2). Elephant activity however, is reported to occur throughout a 24‐hr‐day (Kely et al, 2019), suggesting we missed part of the species' activity time. While available knowledge could be used to interpret results according to species‐specific ecology and behaviour, with ARo activity time fitted over 24 hr, additional sources of variation were avoided (Figure 2).…”

“…In addition, the types of vegetation in the valleys and hills are very possible for elephants to consume. the equivalent level of activity between day and night carried out by elephants will indicate the presence of anthropogenic pressure and this will have an impact on the routes used in elephant activities [7]. The following is a graph of the percentage of area used by elephants in the multi-purpose area of Aceh Timur district.…”

“…La méthodologie du piégeage photographique offre des preuves plus fiables de la présence des espèces animales (Sunarto et al, 2013). En effet, les pièges photographiques peuvent fournir des informations précieuses sur la diversité des espèces, la dynamique des populations (Ahumada et al, 2013), la reconnaissance des individus, l'occupation spatio-temporelle des habitats (Rovero et al, 2014) ainsi que, la période d'activité des espèces animales (Kely et al, 2019 ;Monket et al, 2022).…”
