Spatial distribution and occurrence probability of regional new particle formation events in eastern China

Abstract: Abstract. In this work, the spatial extent of new particle formation (NPF) events and the relative probability of observing particles originating from different spatial origins around three rural sites in eastern China were investigated using the NanoMap method, using particle number size distribution (PNSD) data and air mass back trajectories. The length of the datasets used were 7, 1.5, and 3 years at rural sites Shangdianzi (SDZ) in the North China Plain (NCP), Mt. Tai (TS) in central eastern China, and Lin… Show more

“…The line between two data points indicates that a range of GR and/or CS was reported in the literature. The data are collected in the references in Table 2. and the hygroscopic aerosols contribute more to light extinction compared with low-RH conditions (Shi et al, 2014;Shen et al, 2015). NPF and haze are either purely secondary processes or dominated by secondary pollution processes, so there might be some common properties or internal relations between them.…”

“…This process can occur both locally or on a larger scale; in the latter case the events are characterized as regional. Regional events have been found to take place on a scale of hundreds of kilometres (Németh and Salma, 2014;Shen et al, 2018), without being affected by air mass advection (Salma et al, 2016). NPF is one of the main contributors of particles in the atmosphere (Spracklen et al, 2010;Kulmala et al, 2016;Rahman et al, 2017) and this relative contribution increases when moving from a kerbside to a rural area (Ma and Birmili, 2015).…”

“…The effect of other meteorological variables is even more complex, with studies presenting mixed results on the effect of the wind speed and atmospheric pressure. Extreme values of those variables may be favourable for the occurrence of NPF events, as they are associated with increased mixing in the atmosphere, but at the same time suppress due to increased dilution of precursors Rimnácová et al, 2011;Shen et al, 2018;Siakavaras et al, 2016), or favour them due to a reduced condensation sink (CS).…”
