“…At tidal flat, heavy metals deposit with the particles and accumulate in the sediment through various complex physical, chemical and biological processes, then enter the food chain and take part in the ecological cycle finally (Shen et al 1992). Although research results on the spatial distribution and dynamic accumulation characteristics of heavy metals in the tidal flat sediments of Yangtze estuary indicated that the spatial distribution of Cu, Zn, Cr and Pb in the sediment was not directly influenced by the coastal sewage discharge in the whole estuary area, and were closely related to the local sedimentary dynamic conditions (Chen et al 2000;Xu et al 1997), the sewage discharge had definite impact on the total contents and distribution of heavy metals in the local tidal flat sediments (Bi et al 2003a, b;Brack et al 2001;Feng et al 2004;Lee and Cundy 2001;Zhang et al 2001;Zhou et al 2008).…”

“…These toxicants may accumulate in food chains and present threats to human health finally [2]. The researches about the ecotoxicity of heavy metals always distract global attentions [3][4][5][6]. The surface sediments play a important role in the transfers of heavy metals as a main part of circulation of substance in marine environments [7].…”
