Abstract:Abstract. Nowadays more and more attention is devoted to the spatial development of the location of sports facilities within cities. The main aim of our paper is to observe the most important spatial characteristics of their development in Hungarian cities of county rank. In these cities three main periods of development of sports facilities can be observed. Larger sports facilities were constructed especially on the edge of cities or in the suburbs, while in the case of smaller facilities a bigger role was pl… Show more

This study is a research of national and global evolution of literature on sports and geography with a view to emphasize emergence of a new category of study, least dealt with, whose impact on environment and society is tremendous. Sport is an inseparable component of society due to both its salubrious role through its effects and its necessary equipment and infrastructure. Sport activities are extremely diverse and most of the time they require special material conditions to practice it. This determines, while practice it, a relation of dependence to other fields as well: industrial, demographic, social, cultural, and political with local, national and global influences. Having in view optimisation of sport activities, from the perspective of inter-disciplinarity, a neighbouring field has been configured and developed and it has been called "geography of sports". Analysis of the specialised literature of the two fields (geography and sports) has led us to the conclusion that "geography of sports" has approached two main directions: geography of sports categories (it studies preference given to some sports in different areas), geography of sport infrastructure (it locates sport clubs, stadiums, sport facilities etc.) and geography of sport events (venues for organisation of sport events and their requirements). Also it has emphasised a series of studies on the influence of different geographic zones (mountains, seas, fields) on motor skills of the population, both from the point of view of preparation (athletic training) and from salubrious perspective.

“…The study of the relationship between sport and urban structures confirmed the importance of sustainable development of sport facilities (Li & Luk, 2011, European Commission, 2007. Kozma et al (2016) underlined the importance of the location of sports areas within cities and of the spatial development of sports facilities. Triantafyllidis & Davakos (2019) emphasized the importance of overcrowding, globalization and urbanization in people's lifestyles, stating that exercise leads to motivation, mental and physical wellbeing, community unity, confidence and sustainable consumer behavior.…”
The objective was to identify the factors affecting sustainable development in sports facilities of Razavi Khorasan Province and to design a qualitative model of these factors. The sample of this study consisted of 15 participants (faculty members of sport management, executives of the Ministry of Sport and expert managers of sporting places of Razavi Khorasan Province). In-depth interviews were used as the main data collection tool. In order to analyze the data, the opinions of the experts (text) were coded and categorized. Finally, the identified categories were analyzed according to the conceptual model of research (concepts, components and indicators) and the addition of new components was summarized. This process was carried out with MAXQDA version 18 software. According to the views of the experts analyzed, various factors affect the sustainable development of sports facilities in Razavi Khorasan province. The most important factor was users and the least important factor was privatization. Management, safety, and human resources were also important issues.
“…Main reason for this fact is that the location influences the sport-related activity of society and the performance of different teams (Rodríguez-Canamero et al, 2018;Chacon-Araya et al, 2018). The analyses show, on the one hand, the most important characteristics pertaining to the location of the facilities concerned within the settlements (Chapin, 2000;Estabrooks et al, 2003;Higgs et al, 2015;Kozma et al, 2016;Newsome & Comer, 2000;Thornley, 2002), and on the other hand, they also try to shed light on the differences between the settlements. From this latter point of view, one of the most important findings of the examination of the spatial distribution of leisure sports facilities was the identification of the differences between settlements of different sizes/locations/financial positions (Hallmann et al, 2011).…”
The investments realized in the past decade in the framework of the Hungarian National Programme for Football Field Construction have constituted an important part of the activities of local governments aimed at the development of sports facilities. In the spirit of the above, the aim of this paper is, relying on the database of the Hungarian Football Federation, to explore the spatial characteristics of this project, as well as to identify the relationship between the football fields completed and the various characteristics of the settlements (e.g. population size, level of economic development). Research has indicated that the size of settlements can have a significant influence on the football fields completed, and the economic power of the local government has a major impact on their willingness to construct football fields in the first place. Based on an analysis of the tendencies over time, we can clearly observe the increasing role played by settlements of smaller populations, as well as the decreasing significance of the administrative role of the settlement (preference of administrative district centres).
