Spatial determinants of farmers’ interest in European Union’s pro-investment programs in Poland

Abstract: The purpose of the paper is to investigate spatial determinants of farmers’ interest in pro-investment programs co-financed by the EU, by identifying and describing the territorial clusters of rural areas in Poland where the applications rates for these programs were above or below the national average. We tested for spatial autocorrelation using Moran’s global spatial autocorrelation index, while the search for clusters was done using a local version of Moran’s statistics. The results show significant regiona… Show more

“…Cofinancing development projects, carried out by rural residents, receive support, and the application depends largely on how active the potential beneficiaries are. As opined by Smędzik-Ambro ży et al (2019) [13], the results of the previous programs also suggest that larger farms benefited more than smaller farms from pillar II, which also has the regional dimension [14][15][16]. The study by Matyka (2019) [17] disclosed that the implementation of the main environmental activities under the RDP 2014-2020 is largely differentiated on a regional level.…”

“…The development of organic farming in these regions displays many internal and external spatial factors. The meaningful organic farming crops in communes located in north-western Poland are determined by favorable local natural conditions, mainly rich soils and good water and climate conditions of the seaside and lake district areas [63]; lowland landscape [64]; favorable economic conditions in the form of the highest subsidies for ecological production in Poland in the framework of the Rural Development Program for 2007-2013 and 2014-2020 [65]; the proximity of the borderland and low level of industrialization [63]; relatively small distance to towns (not more than 50 km) [66]; and the quickly developing local fashion for so-called enotourism (wine tourism) [67]. Therefore, the region's communes specialize in growing cereals and pulses, industrial crops, including linseed, sunflower, medicinal plants and spices, and viticulture, as well as sheep and deer breeding.…”

“…According to Kiryluk-Dryjska E. et al [16], the financial support for investments in agriculture increases the structural homogeneity of agricultural holdings and the consolidation of operators that manage to attract financing. The key factors resulting from the study in Poland are represented by access to financing, the size of the agricultural entity and the level of efficiency of the agricultural management.…”
