A procedure is presented that allows monitoring of the dynamic regime of pelagic ecosystems in the North Atlantic Ocean. It uses a diversity index (mean number of species per continuous plankton recorder [CPR] sample) and species assemblage indicators calculated from all calanoid copepods (108 species) identified by the CPR survey since 1958. In any region of the North Atlantic covered by the CPR survey, the procedure calculates the values of these ecosystem indicators using a constant number of samples, selected randomly, and checks any bias associated with the spatial and temporal heterogeneity of the sampling. The procedure is described and illustrated in this study using CPR data in the central North Sea. The usefulness of this tool is demonstrated by a study of the sensitivity of the indicators to the number of CPR samples employed in the estimation of monthly or annual means. Firstly, it is shown that on an annual scale the procedure improves the quality of estimations. However, when long-term changes of a plankton indicator are examined for a particular month, it is crucial to use an appropriate number of CPR samples to detect a significant link between the biological and hydro-climatic environment. Secondly, the importance of using species assemblage indicators is demonstrated. They allowed the detection and the ecological interpretation of both episodic events and the regime shift in the central North Sea. It is shown that the regime shift in the North Sea had a strong impact on plankton community structure and was marked by an increase in diversity related to a progressive increase in warm-water species and a decrease in cold-water species. This study also has important implications for researchers using the CPR data. It demonstrates the robustness of the CPR data, but on the other hand also shows that the spatial and temporal heterogeneity should be assessed with care before interpreting the long-term changes of a CPR-derived plankton indicator. Zooplankton community analyses were performed on 102 µm mesh net samples from 1992 to 2003 from 2 stations, in Massachusetts Bay, USA, approximately 15 km offshore from Boston Harbor. There was significant (p < 0.05) negative correlation, with no temporal lag, between the boreal winter North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index and winter abundance of Calanus finmarchicus adults plus copepodites (CI to CV) at both stations. The negative correlation between the NAO Index and C. finmarchicus is the opposite of the positive relation emerging from other long-term studies in the Gulf of Maine (GOM) region, but is similar to the negative correlation in many areas of the NE Atlantic. Our data reflect primarily abundance of younger copepodites, which dominated our C. finmarchicus data. These younger copepodites had probably been produced during the first winter cohorts of C. finmarchicus each year, and were only weeks to months old upon capture. Previous positive correlations between C. finmarchicus abundance and the NAO index reported in the literature, with temporal lags of 2 to 4 yr, reflected data for larger CV and adult C. finmarchicus, which had probably been produced the previous year and had overwintered in deep basins in the Gulf of Maine. These older individuals would probably have been more subject to longer-term effects of NAO variability on large-scale interannual circulation patterns than the younger copepodites in our samples, which appeared to be more related to short-term climatic variability. Significant negative correlation between wind speed and abundance of C. finmarchicus supported this conclusion.

Abstract. The diversity and distribution of epipelagic metazooplankton across the Mediterranean Sea was studied along a 3000 km long transect from the eastern to the western basins during the BOUM cruise in summer 2008. Metazooplankton were sampled using both a 120 µm mesh size bongo net and Niskin bottles in the upper 200 m layer at 17 stations. Here we report on the stock, the composition and the structure of the metazooplankton community. The abundance was 4 to 8 times higher than in several previously published studies, whereas the biomass remained within the same order of magnitude. An eastward decrease in abundance was evident, although biomass was variable. Spatial (horizontal and vertical) distribution of metazooplankton abundance and biomass was strongly correlated to chlorophyll-a concentration. In addition, a clear association was observed between the vertical distribution of nauplii and small copepods and the depth of the deep chlorophyll maximum. The distinction between the communities of the eastern and western basins was clearly explained by the environmental factors. The specific distribution pattern of remarkable species was also described.
