Spatial comparison and temporal evolution of two marine iron-rich microbial mats from the Lucky Strike Hydrothermal Field, related to environmental variations

Abstract: In hydrothermal environments, diffuse fluids emanations provide optimal conditions for the development of iron-rich microbial mats. Here, we present a unique spatial and temporal study of phylogenetic and chemical data from this type of mats and their associated hydrothermal fluids from two sites of the Lucky Strike Hydrothermal Field (EMSO-Azores deep-sea observatory), collected annually from 2016 to 2020. Our metabarcoding analyses reveal a completely different microbial community at each site, linked to the… Show more

“…In contrast, fewer sites have been investigated on the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge (AMOR) ( 30 , 31 ) and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) ( 23 ). Recently, analyses of iron-rich mats have been performed at the Lucky Strike Hydrothermal Field (LSHF) on the MAR ( 32 ). In a former paper, we analyzed how the spatial and temporal variations in environmental conditions influence the microbial communities in two iron-rich mats from the LSHF ( 32 ) without investigating their Zetaproteobacterial diversity, which is the focus of the present study.…”

“…While biotic factors like grazing activities can strongly regulate microbial cover (Micheli et al 2002;Cuvelier et al 2011a), microbial mat dynamics may also be sensitive to telluric events, and this may explain that rearrangement at depth of the plumbing system detected in September 2015 coincides with the decline of microbial mat cover detected between 2015 and 2018 (Ballu et al 2019;this study). As suggested by a switch in the microbial composition of iron-rich mats in 2016 (Astorch-Cardona et al 2023), the 2015 event could have created temporary conditions also favoring a community change in filamentous mats at Eiffel Tower.…”

“…They pass laterally, at both WC and TE, to brownish sandy domains that display no visual evidence of fluid venting (monitoring location TE‐4; Figures 2d and 5a). In these brownish domains, there are also networks of sinuous patches with yellowish iron oxidizing bulbous microbial mats (Astorch‐Cardona et al., 2023). These yellowish patches are well developed at TE (Figures 2d, 2e, and 5a).…”
