Spatial Characteristics of Suburban Villages Based on Spatial Syntax

Abstract: (1) Background: In the process of urbanization, current suburban village spaces are undergoing drastic changes. Many villages have lost their original rural appearances, and their unique rural cultures have been destroyed. (2) Methods: In this study, we used the Depthmap software to analyze the integration and comprehensibility of the village spaces in the central suburbs of Jilin province. Based on spatial syntax theory, we quantitatively interpreted the suburban village spaces, and we analyzed the correlatio… Show more

“…In previous studies, village spaces were usually classified based on functional attributes, such as living spaces, entertainment spaces, productions space, etc. [77]. Yuting used space syntax to divide the space of traditional villages in Huizhou into points, line, and planes, and discussed the evolution characteristics of traditional village spaces [78].…”

“…A depth map is a measure of the degree of integration of a space with other spaces in the system, which can be perceived as the number of spatial steps needed to pass from one space to another. The higher the degree of integration, the stronger the association of space in the system with the system as a whole, the closer it is to other spaces, the smaller the number of spatial steps needed to pass between them, and the closer the connection [23].…”

“…Initially, in terms of index extraction methods, as village boundaries are two-dimensional closed figures formed by different objective physical elements, the academic community has employed the following quantitative metrics for research. Li et al [48] have noted that the scale of the village boundary directly determines both the size and the spatial morphological traits of the boundary. After fully considering the safe distance for human activity of village space and the accuracy of form quantification, a boundary scale of 90 m has been ultimately established for conducting research on village spatial morphology.…”
